Snow plowing questions and rates

Two questions here how do they charge in your area for driveways/parking lots? per storm over so many inches more money? Any seasonal retainer fee? Next how do your towns pay for snow removal contract per year or per storm? Last what did towns and private buisness/home owners due to cut costs?

Here is what I know and have done in the past.

1. My 900 foot long driveway has been plowed by a few guys in the past, 1 time---$50 cash. 15 minutes. No contract or other strings attached. I am talking about a full size pickup with blade, no salting.

2. When I was the maint. manager at a medium sized company in Mich. (company was bought and wrecked by a competitor 5 years ago) Large parking lot, over an acre. 2nd week of November my company paid $1800 for snow removal, with salting, shoveling the walks too. Then 2st week of Feb. We paid another $1800-----So $3600 to an insured company and they were there at 5AM if it snowed during the night. That is 1 winter season.

You mean you get paid for cleaning your neighbor's drives...what a novel idea..yet to get by first buck...lucky to get a thank you!

My question is, if you charge for your services are you open for a law suit when someone falls on the drives you were paid to clean?

I charge a flat fee for drive ways dependin on how long they are per snow storm. I have a flat fee I charge per snow storm on parkin lots as well. Sometimes Ill cut it back a little if we havent had a big heavy snow cause I dont use as much time or fuel, but that really only for a couple of my better customers. As far as the small town I live in here in Indiana the town has there own equipment. Couple backhoes a single axle dump truck with a plow and salt box and a f-450 wit a blade.

$75.00 per truck/tractor hour, 1 hour min. $25.00 per man hour for shoveling.Been charging that for the past last 11 years. I'm the cheapest in the area.

Our town pays a sort of retainer or guarantee that amounts to about 80 hours. After that they get paid by the hour. Something like $60.00 for P/U, $75.00 for drw, $100.00 for 26,000 lb. Add $25 for wing, add $35 for sander.

It all depends on what the customer wants. Some customers to prefer to pay a flat monthly rate regardless if it snows or not. Other's prefer to pay by the hour. If you're doing snow removal in parking lots you better have insurance. Anything can be hidden under snow and most businesses will request it before hiring. Dave
