Cow Judging

Anybody participate in the Hoards Dairyman cow judging contest? Or just guess on your own and wait for the results? Last 2 magazines have had the brown swiss, and holsteins. Its kinda neat to see what cows judge the best. I circle the ones I like, then see how close I am when they show the winners. Jay

HD=BS. Never put anything in the bulk tank. Subscribed for a few years in 30 years. Waste of money, poor articles, farm tips, everything else. Anyone with brains like a HD editor would go broke farming. Geared to the 4-H and FFA, county nerds. Judging criteria always changed over the years---reminded me of 4-H and FFA...selling 4 ten thousand $ cats for one 40 thousand $ dog at the fair.

I find it interesting how different showing dairy cattle vs showing beef cattle is. Granted the judges look for different things for the uses of each breed. This next year is my last year in 4-H and I'm kinda glad. Showing just isn't as fun as it used to be because more people pay off the judge or are friends with the judge so they win the whole show. It takes the fun out of it when you already know whose going to win because they cheat

Never entered the contest, but always look at the cows and try to put them in the order I would pick. Often can pick the first or last place cow, second and third place not so much luck/skill. And that is where I think it really counts. Everybody can see a beauty queen or a real dog , but try to get the middle ones in order.

Tyler , that is nothing new . When I was showing back in the late 60s early 70s at our county fair there was one famliy that won everything . They showed hogs , cattle and sheep . Two boys and a girl and the dad that had his nose in everything that was going on . When your spred out over the whole fair ya cant win every grandchampion and your brother get reservechamp without alittle help !!

Did it some in Vo-ag. But it ends up being more of a game to see which one the official judges picked. I like to do my own judging. It does seem like when I pick out the pure-bred bulls I like they are consistently the ones that bring the big bucks.

Haven't heard of that magazine in would guess 30 years, sounds like it must still be printed or your last two magazines are very old.
