Since I'm stuck inside for the day I figured I would do some research for my senior paper that I have to do but no matter where I search I can't find the answer to my topic. It's lik they skip around the issue. So I thought I would ask the guys that might know something about it. My topic is that organic farmers should get tax breaks. I reallllllllly don't like this topic idea but my review bored (a bunch of city ladies) didn't like my original idea of more people should restore tractors instead of buy new. Being a cattle farmer I have no real idea of crop tax law. Do an of you guys know what kind of tax break if any that organic farmers get??? Thanks!

I am a University professor with a Ph.D. I teach Environmental resource and Technology classes at St. Cloud State University. (for use in the reference page, not to make a point.)
The US farmer is already given a crossection of tax advantages which, when added to subsidies, is substantially the reason many stay in operation. In my opinion the Organic farmer is already going to be in a positin of recieving more for each organic product delivered, and is thus in a position to succeed.
If the answer was simple it would be NO.
They already do.
The larger answer is should small farmers under a specific acreage (lets say 500 for row crops, 1000 for cattle, and 2000 for dry land western farming) be treated differentially compared to agribusiness. Answer yes.
The small farmer is also more likely to be able to control aspects of operation allowing Organic certification. James A. Nicholson

All I can offer is an opinion.

Why should organic farms be treated differently than conventional farms?

Guess that hints that I'm opposed to such tax breaks.

None at a federal level. No subsidies, and usually doesn't qualify for acreage programs.

How many subsidies does St. Cloud State University get??????? Bet they are much larger than any I have ever gotten. I really get PO when people complain about farm subsidies as if they are the only ones getting anything. I have to produce to get my subsidies, too many of the rest just get a free ride with no results.
