Anyone know why semi trucks used to drag a chain back in the 50's and 60's? I can remember seeing them on the road but have no idea why.

Thanks PeterL

Standard oil trucks used to drag one, to eliminate static, when loading and unloading petro products. The answer always used to be Standard oil does it, and they made X million dollars last year!

idea was that it kept statice electricty down . that way you wouldn't have as much dust on your windshields seen them, on a lot of combines just not much any more

now we know why theres so many answer to one post i posted no on had but time i hit sumit three of us had answered,

Conductive tires and grounded hoses have all but eliminated the need for a static ground on vehicles including aircraft.

Dragging them chains was a pain because you was always replacing them. It was to get rid of static electricty. You had more static electricty when loading a fuel truck. You had to connect a ground cable before loading for safety.
Never made no sense to me to have all them sparks coming out from behind a fuel truck.

Was the problem with static just a schock when getting in or out of a vehicle or was there more to it, I could see it on a fuel truck.

Thanks PeterL

Dave, If the oil trucks drug a chain and made money, I decided to drag a chain with my truck...Didn't work, I'm still poor:)

Don't remember dragging chains on the road , but remember the rubber straps impregnated with extra carbon to drag for the static .
