Farmall H rear tire woes revisited

I posted a message a few days ago about my problems finding an inexpensive rear tire for my "H". The existing tire size is 12.4-38. I've found a tire nearby but the size is 18?-38. It will fit my rim but I have no idea what will happen when I put these different size tires on my tractor. Anybody know what will work and what won't? Appreciate the advice in advance because I have no idea what the possibilities are for a different size tire.

I have never heard or anyone putting larger than a 15.5 or a 14.9 on an H, at least on stock rims. You'll end up with higher ground speed because the 18.4 is taller as well as wider. I'm sure it is possible but I don't think you'll like it. I have a set of cheap 12.4s for sale but I'm in NY and you're in CO as I recall, so that won't work.

An 18 will not fit (correctly if at all) also mixed mached tires can damage ring pinion etc.

I would keep looking. If you had one 18.?X38 and a 12.4X38 on the same tractor you would end up going around in circles because of one tire being so much small then the other. Plus that 18 is so wide that on a 10 inch rim which you probably have or close to it you would have one very odd looking tractor

In what way would it damage the ring and pinion? I never heard of that. I have seen power units made from auto engimes and rear end with one side brakes locked up and running equipment for months / years(?) with no apparent trouble.

What he means is it is hard on the differential. To drive straight the differential will have to make up the difference in tire sizes. It would be like he was spinning the small tire all of the time. If he does not use it much he will be OK. If he uses it a lot he could ruin the differential carrier and pinion gears.
