Another of those terrible O/Ts

Seems O/T is all I can do lately.

Here's a picture of one of the things this retired guy and a friend are doing, repairing old and building new violins.

This is a new top that I'm currently working on, shaping the "F" holes.

That piece is spruce. Back and sides are maple.
We buy the wood as rectangular pieces and cut everything using dimension charts and templates. Some of the cutting is done with machines, but most is done by hand with chisels, scrapers and various grades of sandpaper.

That is a very nice job. I started making my first violin about three weeks ago but now I have gotten sidetracked into making a banjo for a customer. I can only hope that someday I'll learn to make violins as nice as yours. I built this mandolin a couple of years ago and it gave me the idea that I could maybe learn to carve violin plates.

I carved it, you'll notice I didn't bind it. The top is some odd bits of western red cedar that I had around, which is why it is in three pieces. I followed the instructions in a mandolin book by Roger Siminoff, except that his plan was for an F5 and I was not brave enough to try to do the points and the scroll.

Very impressive. Hope I didn't spoil your day by asking if it was from a kit. Sometimes hard to tell from a photo.

Not at all, it's a very reasonable question. I'd like to see a photo of one of your complete violins if you have one handy in the computer.
