330 FORD MOTOR GAVEIT UP TODAY , with 250 bu. of corn , what engine can i put in a 1975 f -600 ?..neighbor has 390 and says it will bolt up and work , we may have to use the 330 timing chain cover and front engine parts.. may have flywheel parts complications that need to swap out ,, it is old stlye points early 70s era , and I know He will help Make it work .. LOL , what is the significance of 360s,361,370 ,390 and 391s ,will they bolt in ?... i think that 360 and 390 are light truck motors? , all others listed above are heavy truck motors? .. and am willing to take the chance if they bolt up,. lotsa frree parts available to make it happen in neighbors salvage garage and yard.. also did Ford build 330,333,and 335s in that era ? .. are they nearly identical or radically different ?

330,361,391 all use same gskt set. 352,360,390 bolt in with mods. My 64 700 with 330 on propane giveing me fits. Had backfire thru carb and melted part of it, swallowed aluimum in to every cyl trying to get it all cleaned out.

A 428 would also bolt in and increase your power alot. Same basic block as the 330 to 427. We had an industrial 428 running a water well on natural gas for years and never any problems with it.

Every time I have gotten into a swap like that I have wished I had just rebuilt the original engine. Seems like there is always some complication in getting it to fit in that takes more time and running around to find a special part than it wouldhave to just have rebuilt it in the first place. You end up with a new engine to boot not some engine someone has fond memories of.
Just my 2 cents...

The engines for a big truck are different internally from the car and pickup ones.I dont think pistons or crank or cam will interchange but the bolt pattern might be the same. The Flywheel might be different I cant remember. It seems like the block for big trucks is taller. It might be like a police interceptor block, maybe.I think the heads will work, pushrods probably wont
Something about the front of the engine might be different. The way it mounts in a big truck might be different.
330 was a truck engine, then 361 and 391 were truck engines.I havent worked on a 330 but no parts will interchange between a 361 and 391 except the heads.Cranks and pistons are different.Probably nothing will work on a 330.
A 360 or a 390 or 352 were used in cars and pickups and station wagons.390 is the best of those and probably would bolt to the transmission. You would have to ask Ford whether the flywheel would work or not.Maybe if you use the one that comes on the 390,and then you would need to use the 390 bellhousing which might or might not bolt to the transmission.Im thinking it will work.

yuck, you think itstill inthere ? i think i would do a valve job and get that aluminum out of there , probably headed that way anyway you can search earlier posts last month and fall on this 330 . it was hard to be impressed about power and economy ..probably gaulded the crank when gas filled the crankcase on 2 differrent events ,, didnt run too long each time , but i guess long enuf to harm and lock it damtite.. just hope the 390 crank is not to lite ,. i don't push and run hard , and probably put 3000 miles or less a yr .

the 360 and 390 are pickup engines, the major difference is the crank snout or front is much shorter than the truck engines. you may have a problem with fan belts etc. it would be best to replace with a truck engine or rebuild what you have, a lot less problems. hope this helps, chuck

Jim, the 330, 361, and 391 are considered FT-series engines...as opposed to the FE-series engines such as the 332, 352, 360 [light truck], 390, 406, 410, 427, and 428.

Good news, as I understand it, is that the
bellhousing pattern is the same...so if you can find a complete 390 and swap it in [and I stress "COMPLETE," because crankshaft snouts are different diameters between the engines], I think you might be OK.

Check with Beaker...He's a Ford man, he'll know where to find one close and cheap if anyone does.

is there someone on the forum named beaker ? Because thats Funny ,,Beaker is the name of th e guy that has the 390 over here in this neck of the woods ...

as Buzzman said the FT is the "industrial" version of the FE...main differences are the FT has a governor and all FT have 4 bolt mains and heavier blocks...a complete FE will bolt in but you will have to modify your exhaust to fit the manifolds...cant recall offhand but i think the radiator hoses hook up different too.
if youre not long hauling a 390 or 428 will do you just fine...360's had weak cam bearings and 427's are rare and VERY expensive IF you find one.

You Knowthem Too BUZZ ?!..they are a colorful bunch ,LOL, shot me a more than reasonable price with a limited warranty so to speak ,, In the am gonna dig it Out of all its wrappings and crank it Thru slow and try to liven the 390 up.. few years ago sr bob poured motor oil in the intake, gonna put it on a stand and drain it ,,, put some lucas do-gooder fuel conditionre in the cylindars and crank the oil pump with a cordless drill and shaft that sr bob has ,, ARE THE OIL PANS INTERCHANGEABLE too ??

is it possible to swap ehaust manifold from 330 onto the 390 ? btw, nephew has a 428 basket case that is complte for anyone that wants that sort of project ,ALSO, i have 3 rebuildable 429s that could go to a loving home for a reasonable price,, thy are SOO SMOOooth and powerful when tuned JUST rite (and economical too ) ,, but not nearly as forgiveable as 352s, 302 and 390s of the same era when they are a little out of tune,

I believe the oil pans DO interchange. And it's hard to spend as many years as I have in Harrison and Crawford counties, and mess with cars/trucks/engines, and NOT know Beaker.

Doing just about ANY engine swap and NOT having to do some exhaust fabrication is almost an impossible dream. The 428 is an FE series engine, but the 429 is a "385" series engine, same as a 460.

I have not been involved in a 390 to replace a 330, but I have been into swaping a 390 for a 391.
One really big problem was that a 391 truck flywheel will not balance a 390, it will shake like heck.
Also if you need to use the damper pulley from the FT 391, it will not fit because the 390 crank snout is much smaller. The 391 distributor will not fit in a 390 block because the distributor shaft is larger. Lots of difference between the light duty car / pickup FE engine compared to the Heavy duty truck / industrial FT engines.

I have a running 75 F-600 I am going to sell, part out or junk. It has a good engine in it. If you are interested in it let me know.

Is the 390 out of a pickup? If so you don't want it in your truck. You will melt the pistons. Then you will be taking it back out again so you can replace it with a 391. Been there! Jim

Ford made a 330 Medium Duty and 330 Heavy Duty. HD had sodium valves. Get a 361 if you can find one, tough as nails. 330 underpowered,391 had a nasty habit of blowing up, throwing rods and blocks cracking. Have owned all of them over the years and even a few 292's. Don't own anything but Diesels now.

The FT engines have a front mount that attaches to the timing cover which is steel instead of aluminum. The FT blocks are not even drilled for side mounts. The FT cranks have a larger diameter front snout so you cannot put the FT timing cover on a FE. I think you'd be better off finding a 391 to rebuild if you want more power than the 330.

I've got a 391, a 370, and a 429. The 429 is a strong one for sure but my favorite above all is the 370. I run it with a 2 bbl. Really not any more economical than the others, but just a smooth engine that pulls well on the low end. It has less issues with valve stem seals as well (at least on mine).

I remember the car and truck motors being balanced differently. One internal and the other external. I think this can be overcome but can't tell you how. Have fun!

email me ([email protected]) if you are interested then I will give you my number. Sorry I do not like to publish it for everyone to see. I am in South Carolina. I do not know where you are but you could most likely have this shipped to you for under $150. I have the whole truck that is running. I am upgradding to a 92 Kodiak/topkick 7500.

As I've had no side work for my F-600..I'm going to parts it out and probably put together an enclosed trailer..1978 F-600 330HD 5 and 3 Trannies. 5 year old Monroe service body[utility] never seen salt..Homebuilt crane fashioned after Powers brand truck crane.. Chassis has some light rot started i.e. front fender and fender extension drivers side..I'm going to keep the Hobart welder between cab and utility body..A respectable looking truck..Painted dark teal color with silver grill bumpers and crane.. I might be dreaming in Technicolor but I'd like to see 3 grand for the whole truck..Northeast Ohio
