Egg sucking dog

I know this is a little off topic, but I was replacing the 3pt cylinder on my tractor last night. While i was under the tractor, my 2yr old lab decides to bring me two eggs from the chicken coop. For the last week, I've noticed the chickens hadn't been laying many eggs and I kind of blamed it on the cold weather, but now I know where the eggs have been going. She must enjoy the taste of the eggs, because she is crushing and eating them. How do I get her to stop.

I thought it was an external_link thread.

There's really nothing you can do besides "teach" her to stay away from the chicken coop. Shock collars are good for that.

This happened to a dog we had years ago. Dad took an egg and emptied the contents and then filled it with black pepper. He got the dog in question to come to him and he offered it the egg. He took it and once he did Dad clamped his mouth shut so he couldn't get away. Dad said the dog got away and the last he saw of him he went over the hill and jumped in the pond. The dog came back and never bothered another egg again. Mike

This works. Make small hole in egg. put in red pepper, maybee tobasco sause, feed to dog.Dog will not look at another egg. I did it and it was an instant cure.

When I was a kid had a dog that liked eggs. Dad fried one up poured black pepper on it, dog sucked it right down. Dog liked it.

Everyone is so negative

I love my dog

I sure would love him even more if he feed himself

like yours does. get some more chickens.

The black pepper has worked for a dozen decades, and never heard of one time that it did not work.

Yeqars ago every farmer had chickens, and that was a everday issue in the neighborhood.

I got 8000 chickens, so I get a couple dozen bad eggs a day. I feed them out of the shells to the dog and cats, but they can't get access to the good eggs.

A chicken can go through a lot smaller hole than a dog can. Can you make the doors to the coop smaller? How about buying or making roll-away nests that hold the egg in a box away from both the chickens and the dog?

Another idea I never tried - My F-I-L said his dad would save up some rotten eggs and force the dog to eat them.

Good luck,

How is the dog getting to the eggs?If the hens are loose he may be finding stray eggs in the fence rows or under machinery.

She has to be climbing through the 10x10 door in the coop. That is the only way she can get in. The laying boxes are along the back wall for me to get to the eggs, but she can't twist the handle, raise the door, and get to the eggs that way.

Well we started raising layers around the same time we got sarge as a puppy, so we raised them together. He was always allowed inside the coop, and taught to leave them alone. He is now 8 years old and we are on our 8th batch of chickens.

When I was a little kid I remember my grandma was having that trouble. She boiled an egg and while it was still hot, grabbed the dog, put it in his mouth and held it shut. That dog wouldn't look at an egg or my Grandma for a month. No more egg stealing.

Hah! I love it!

My dog was the same way, raised from a pup around chickens and never offered to bother them.

When she came in the coop with me, I had to watch her, or she'd snatch an egg out of a nest, but a sharp word was always enough.

She was on steroids for a bum hip and ALWAYS hungry. If we let her in the garden, she would dig up and eat taters and carrots, snatch string beans off the vine, pretty much eat anything but the lettuce and I ain't so sure but what she'dve eaten that if there was nothing else available.

we feed our cracked and such eggs to the dogs raw eggs will rid a dog of stomach worms and make there coat shine as well

My dad would grind up some really hot peppers. Fill the egg with the juice seal it and put it back in the nest. Saw many dogs running for the stock tank. But they did stop eating eggs.
