disconnect battery and let the computer reset.
check the fuel/water filter. I know, it has a lite to tell you when its full of water. Sometimes doesn"t work right. There is a site for Ford diesel problems called intellidog.com. That guy is a retired Fd diesel mechanic I think. Might look it up and see if his instructions covers your problem.

All I know about them is, start by changing the cam position sensor (CPS). Many people carry a spare in their glove compartment.

i'd for sure change the fuel fitler first, and see what the fuel looke dlike coming out of it.

as for the cps.. yeah.. lots of us carry a spare.. but it's usually an all or nothing deal. won't start/run without it.

mine is a 99 7.3

ditto on disconnection battery for a bit.

past that try to get a scan read at a parts store.. most do it for free. might involve winching it on a trailer or something though...

Sounds like the valve cover gaskets need to be replaced. The injector and glow plug wiring go through the gaskets. They short out at the connectors at the most inapropriate time. May as well replace glow plugs when you have the covers off. There was a recall on the cam sensors. If it has not been replaced, Ford will replace

Here's some more things to check: Look under the fuel filter housing and see if you have diesel fuel on top of engine. The fuel lift pump sits there and has a weep hole which leaks if pump is going bad. Check fuel pressure at schrader valve on side of fuel filter housing. Should fluxuate between 30 to 50 lbs while cranking engine. I remove schrader valve and connect pressure guage there- 1/8 inch pipe threads. If lift pump is bad it is a pain to change. Remove filter housing to get acess to pump. Replace three short hoses while there. When removing lift pump Don't Let Pushrod Fall Into Hole. If lucky it will go all way to oil pan and not hang up on crankshaft. Engine will run on 4 cylinders if valve cover connections are bad on one side. Had that happen on interstate one time. Injector driver module quit on mine at around 140,000 miles. Had water in it and everything burned up inside. Some on Ebay if you need one. If you got plenty of time to read go to: www.thedieselstop.com .There is a lot of information there and how to check out about every control on that engine. Hope this helps. DH
