We have a 1997 Ford Explorer vin# 1FMDU34EXVZC35002. Can anybody tell me what trans. I have. The truck has 4 wheel drive. After it got hung up on a snow bank. After that had to start out in 2nd, gear than shift into D position. Yesterday if you slowed down coun not move forward until you shut off engine and restarted engine. Within an hour it would not move at all. Any Ideas? What is the web site for the Ford FWD pickups? Thank you for any and all help!! Armand

It has a 5R55E transmission designed in Mercanich, Germany and built in Bordeaux, France. 5R55E comes from 5 speed, Rear wheel drive, 550 Lb.Ft., Electronic control.

I can only guess that the snow bank pushing at the underside of the vehicle somehow damaged the electronic control wiring harness to the transmission. There are two wiring connections to the transmission, one for electronic shift control and one for manual lever positon sensing. MLPS tells the computer which gear you have selected and controls the transmission accordingly. It also allows you to only start the vehicle in the park position. Put it on a hoist and take a look for pulled, cut, ripped, and damaged wiring. Remember to look at both sets of wires, manual lever position sensor and electronic control wiring to the hydraulic solenoid body.
