OK know it's been asked ,but J.D. No.5 sickle mower

Anyone out there tell me what it's worth.Looking to buy one for my mid 40's J.D. A tractor.Does someone have some good pictures of the mower hooked up to a tractor.Want to know if all the hardware is there to hook it up.It's a working mower that the gentleman has used on the back of a Farmall.Hope it's all there so I don't have to hunt down hardware.Thanks Guys BlaineF(WA)


James Howell out there .Seen your posts on the subject .But theres no good pictures of hooking it to the tractor.

I have the last # 5 sold new in our county, it is on a H IH and never been off. I plan to rebuild and restore the tractor next winter.
I have most of a parts machine.
They seldom bring a 100 here at auction.

The hookup for a JD A or B of that era is unique to the JD tractors. It's not likely to be with a mower that was used on an IH. There were lots of those mowers made, and mounting parts should be available.

You probably will need a couple of J-irons to bolt
the mower crossbar to. I have some.

I've bought two a few years ago. $55 for one and $75 for the other. Made one good one out of two. Have a few parts left, but nothing for the hitch to a tractor.

Mowed with a #5 on a Farmall M for many years. Just bolted the flat hitch bar of the mower to the flat bar of the tractor hitch (had to remove the drawbar roller and drop the drawbar a little and tied up to the hitch). Ran the cutter bar lift with a hydraulic one-way cylinder ran off the belly pump. Really nothing special needed, BUT, that is with a mower equipped with the older flat hitch, and not the quick hitch. If you have a manual for the #5, it will show how the mower is hitched to many different brands and models of tractors.

Last JD #5 mower that we bought was "Ben Franklin" and we paid $100.
