Deep freezer temps

What is the ideal temp to keep my deep freezer set at. It has a dial from 1-7. Should I just put it on about 3 1/2 or 4 & call it good or is there a ideal temp ( say zero or -20 ) I will check it with a thermometer & adjust the dial accordingly. Thanks Gerald

zero degrees is considered the ideal temp setting by most manufacturers. Most freezers temp range is about 10+ to 15- so right in the middle is where you want to be on the dial.

I like to keep a little thermometer in both of our freezers and try to remember to check it occasionally. I have heard that 0 is the best too.

While on that subject... I have a GE Ref freezer combination... Out in the Garage for Extra storage, and whats strange is!! in cold weather it will let items thaw out,in the Summer it freezes great, Whats happening here all the gaskets are Fine??It appears that it doesnt want to Run out in the Cold.. help Please..Larry

I keep mine at around zero F. Also, due to frequent power outages, I keep a couple of ice cubes in a ziplock inside freezer, so I'll know if it got warm enough to spoil contents if I'm on a trip. Cubes melt...toss food.

In my freezer I keep around 10-15 bottles of water. I use 2 litter bottle from my Dr. pepper. That way if the power goes out it will keep cold for days plus you can pull one or 2 out for water if you need water so it does 2 things and a full freezer cost less to run then an empty one does

DEEP freeze is considered to be zero F as opposed to 32F for light freeze. Dont get me in to celcius as it will start a war.

What's happening is the thermostat that controls your compressor is actually in the refrigerator section, and the temp in the freezer is not directly controlled by it. Under normal conditions inside a house the compressor runs enough to keep the refrigerator section cool that hte freezed section stays frozen. When the temp is really low, but not below freezing, the thermostat in refrigerator section does not call for cooling very often, if at all, so the freezer section does not get any cooling and food in there thaws. Hope this helps.

You guys are talking about freezer thermometers - I use the digital thermometers with the temp sensor on a wire. Just throw the sensor in the fridge and hang the readout nearby. If you have a power outage - it will help you resist the temptation of opening the lid to check on the contents, and I can check them daily without dumping the cold out. And a lot of them have a "history" function. I've always wanted to splice in some thermostat wire and mount the readout up in the house so I wouldn't have to go to the basement to check on them. Haven't tried it yet.

I've tried the wireless type - they worked for awhile, but the batts don't last long.

One of our freezers runs around -5 degrees, the other about +2 degrees. When the power goes down, I let them get up to +15 and then plug them into the genny.
