I have A new HP printer with fax & printer all in one. It sure works good. It can be used both with USB or wireless, like most all now days.

Question is, would it be okay to hook it up on the same phone line{house phone} for fax? As I will not be useing it very much for fax.
Any of you every use one phone line for both.

Any info helpful

Used to have to set the ringers for both phone and fax so they wouldn't interfere with each other...

I have a stand alone fax and have that number piggy backed onto my home phone. My office has the business number and an 800 number on it. You will need "Distinctive Ring" service installed by your phone company. I get a single ring for the home phone, a double ring for the fax.

If you can get the Distinctive Ring feature. Only cost you a few bucks per month and you can set your fax to pick up that ring. That way regular calls to your phone will not get the fax tone when they call and you don't answer the phone. I had one set up like this and it worked great. You should be able to set your comupter up to recieve and send faxes.

You can purchase a Call Director from most any electronics store, Radio Shack for example. The call director has a place to plug in Phone Line and then 3 outputs. One for you telephone, one for Fax, and a third for Modem. When someone calls the director answers and in less than a second determins from the data on the line if it is a FAX, Modem, or Person calling and directs the call to the correct output. I hook them up all the time for small busines use. Cost is minimal.

If you are only faxing out set it to not answer the phone and you"ll be fine. If this line is only for the computer and fax and not used as a voice line then its not an issue if the fax answers the phone.

Anyone know about how much the phone line device costs?
I do not receive a lot of faxes and just turn it on now when I expect one.

We did that for several years with no problems, and no extra hardware. You just need to make sure the FAX won't interrupt whatever else you're doing. That's a FAX programming function. Incoming FAX needs to get a busy signal if you're using the line.

We went wireless a couple of years ago, both phone and internet. Scanning to email works better than FAXing. Twice somebody's been annoyed they had to scan rather than FAX us, but the large majority was much happier. Lots of traffic with our home business.

Will harm nothing at all. If you have an answering machine though, you may want to change the number of ring cycles lower for it to answer than that of the fax. Fax answer on fourth ring, answering maching answer on third. Then make sure answering machine isn't plugged in and turned on when expecting a fax. And, if you only fax outbound, you may want to turn off auto-answer so that your fax isn't constantly answering calls, or getting slammed by adverstisements once someone's predictive dealer figures out that its a fax discovered as preferred. Like anythin else, modems and stuff, not a bad idea to unplug if not being used, that way doesn't get zapped during a storm, brown out, etc. And by the way, if you suddenly develop phone problems, by all means unplug the fax from the line to see if clears.

Good luck.

Most new All-In-One printers are designed to work with an answering machine. The fax part of the printer will be monitoring the phone line and will answer and print the fax it the answering machine get a fax squawk.

Thanks for all the info. on fax & printer. Now I see I have several options. I knew it was A way but was not sure. I will check on it soon.
Thanks A lot

The only problem is you can't use both at once.

Easiest, cheapest way is to connect the fax to the "PHONE" jack on the modem.

Yes, I have my DSL internet AND my fax both on the same line. Works very good. Check with you internet provider as there may be a filter that needs to be installed for the fax, but that filter just plugs into the phone jack and then the fax plugs into the filter.
