White 2-150

Just looking for a tractor to farm 275 acres or cornsoybean rotation. Figured a White 2-150 would be enough muscle or too much? Or maybe a John Deere 4020? Looking for the right fit. I want to farm it as fast as I can, yet not get a total gas guzzler.

Yeah, John Deere brand isn't cheap. Am not familiar with White at all. Was not aware parts would be a problem with the White. Good input, thanks.

I have never run a 2-150, but was always told to stay away from them. It had the minnie motor in it, which my understanding is they sped it up for this tractor and it had some major reliability issues. It's also an expensive engine to rebuild. Don't know if it's true but that's what I have always been told.

Good Luck

I've got a couple of MM's and older IH's that contribute heavily to the farm operation. Although most are in great condition I've still had reservations about having discontinued, low- volume tractors being the farm's mainstays. Consequently have a backup for everthing which I'm sure isn't feasible for many. I consider a White 150 which is a front MM attached to a rear Oliver in a similar category. Unless you have access to another tractor, either borrow or rent, I would search for something else more mainstream.

Not knowing where you're located the type of tillge you want to use governs the tractor you need like no-till doesn't require the big dirt flipper like for 275 acres of no-till would only require something like 85 to 100hp to pull a no-till planter and maybe pull a chisel plow occassionally and even pull a sprayer economically.

I don't know enough about the 2-150 other than I wish I had one in my collection. If you want to farm 275 acres "fast" you are going to need higher horse power and larger equipment than what you mentioned.

Look into a Ford....9700.lots of power, good economy.neighbor has 2...together htey burn less fuel than the one JD 4630.

The White 2-150 is the same tractor as a Moline or Oliver G-1355. They just changed the sheetmetal. If given the choice,I'd go with a 2-135 or 2-155. They had the 478 Hercules engine and a totally new design for the transmission and rearend. Bulletproof.

Whites are good tractors, especially the late 1980's/1990's "workhorse" models with the cummins engines. Only the orphan 2-150's would be an issue for parts. Pretty much any model other than that one should be ok. Check to see if you have an AGCO dealer around.
Another source of cheap power with decent parts availability are the Case 1070 thru 1370 tractors. If you find one ask the Case forum guys for more details.
Good luck.
