versatile hard shifting

If you are refering to grinding gears even with the motor RPM slow and your foot against the firewall, then the clutch is out of adjustment. That can be the internal adjustment of the pressure plate first or the external linkage second. See if the transmission brake is functioning or if it worn out or the key has sheared. If you are refering to a problem of hanging up in two gears at once, the problem is in the shifting tower in the floor. Big Tractor Parts has those replacement towers now.

I have an 850 that has that problem. You have to make a real definite overshift coming out of one gear to neutral before you go into another gear. The other solution is to replace the tower as previously described.

The problem gets worse the more slop that wears into the linkages. There are some small plastic collars (at least on the slightly later 875/895 series) that when worn on shifter rods make it a lot harder to shift...

There isn't much to replacing them - if you have the new ones...
