My new 1937 John Deere A tractor (Pict's)

Here is the story.
I posted a want add on craigslist about wanting old John Deere tractors to see what I could find in the area. One of the first to call was a man who lived about 30 minutes away from me. He told me of an old John Deere A tractor that his grandfather had purchased new back in 1938. After receiving pictures through email I figured it was worth the drive to go and see the tractor in person. So today after I got out of class I went on a little trip to check the tractor over. I arrived and looked the tractor over and for the most part it was in as described condition. Like I said before, the tractor was purchased new by this mans grandfather and was used up until the 1970's and then was placed in the shed as the back up tractor. About 10 years ago the grandson pulled the tractor out of the shed as it was falling in on it and brought it back to his garage in hopes of one day restoring it. He never got around to it and decided to sell it so he called me and told me of his tractor.
The tractor is stuck but he said that once he pulled it into the garage he put penetrating oil into the cylinders. The wheels are cutoffs where the original steal was cut down and rims welded on. During the time of it being used as one of the main tractors he said that his grandfather added a power-trol to the back to replace the original hydraulic setup. The tractor will most likely need a full restoration. It is in need of new tires and a radiator cap and another front rim. He was asking $650 for the tractor so I counter offered $450. I then told him that I could give it a great home and it would be properly restored, of which I intend to do. He then counter offered $500 so we settled in the middle at $475. It looks like it will be a really fun project. My dad had been saying that he would like me to get an Unstyled John Deere so now I have done just that. The transmission goes into all the gears and the High/Low shifts back and fourth as does the PTO lever. I have everything for it but the one front rim and the radiator cap so it is a fairly complete tractor. It is serial number 461694 so if one of you John Deere gurus with your great wisdom could please tell me the build date and when it was shipped and what was originally on it that would be great.
Once the weather gets nicer and the snow starts to melt I will go and pick up the tractor.
Check out the Pict's and tell me what you think.
Thanks for reading!

Looks to be missing one of the highest $$ parts you can have missing from it. The Carb which can cost around $500 to replace if you can find an all fuel one which is what it needs on it

The carb is sitting in the box on the seat along with other parts that go on the tractor that the guy started tearing off when he got ambitious on day. It will need to be rebuilt but at least I have it.

Rebuilding a carb is no big deal unless it has gotten water in it at some point and froze and broken the down pipe area of it and if that has happen your still looking at $500 unless you know some one who can cut it off and replace he bad part of it. That what was wrong with the one on my 1935 JD-B. Oh by the way did you get lucky and get the owners manual that the guys grand father should have had?? I have the one for my B but it was my grand fathers tractor

One reason I ask if he had the manual is if he does and you can get it, it will tell you pretty much every thing you need to know about that tractor and how t do it. The manual I have for mine tells how to rebuild the engine, fill tires with fluid and how to change tires and all the stuff you would need to know how to do when there wasn't many people that could even think about doing the work

Yes I am interested. The one rim that he does have is a standard rim that has 6 holes for mounting the rim onto the hub. So If you have one like I described let me know the price and I will consider it.
Thanks!!!

nice! I was glad to hear your dad was interested also, he should be real proud of you and your collection, It is always nice to hear your posts, and great to hear of a young man enjoying a hobby. Your collection is very impressive!

Looks like one of those garage on the "Hoarders" tv program. That's the sellers place, right?

Good for you. Glad you're giving that one a new chance on life. Hate seeing them scrapped or parted out when they are complete tractors just needing a little help getting back to their full glory.

This one is in much better condition than the other one you asked us about last week.

This one has some potential; the other one . . .

You made a good find and a good deal; proud for you.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

Looks like you found good project, and got a good deal too I think. Nice to know there are other younger people out there that love the old iron.

Hey the reason I post so much is to do my best to help others help them self's and like with that manual few people know the old manuals where almost like having an owners manual and shop manual all rolled into one

I'd say that's a pretty good find. Unstyed tractors in unrestored condition are becoming extremely rare. Talk to me. I'll try to convince you to do a "preserve" on it. get it cleaned up and running properly but don't repaint it.

I wonder if the original building and /or farm is still around so you could go poke around and look for the original seat assy, and maybe some other goodies.

I do like the idea of keeping it original. I am really considering doing just that. You are right when you say that they are becoming rare when they are in there original "work clothes" and when you can see the original stenciling. I will put on new tires as the ones on it are shot. I plan on rebuilding the engine and making it run like it was new. Another good reason to keep it original is that it won't hurt the wallet as much as it would by putting a fresh coat of paint on it.
Thanks for your input!
