o/t Cleaning sidewalks

After reading the post from 135 fan, I decided I had to ask something, and decided not to hi-jack his post.

I know of a guy in a nearby rural village who clears his sidewalks with a garden tractor.. No harm, no foul..

BUT if the neighbor pushes the sidewalk with his 4-wheeler with a blade, he wants to call the cops and raises all sorts of cain..

Can someone please explain what the difference is, as I really can't see where there's any difference.. I know the "complainer" in this case is just a habitual complainer.. and isn't happy unless he's complaining, but when you bring up there's really no difference he gets worked up and says "ITS NOT THE SAME.. NOT EVEN CLOSE" and changes the subject.

Must be a jealousy thing.. (or he's just miserable, and not happy unless he makes everyone miserable) I don't care how ya clear your snow.. Personally, I don't care if you don't clear your snow.. As long as ya don't clear it to my driveway it really don't affect me one bit LOL

Good, let him call the cops. An ATV on your own property or sidewalk should be no problem. Now I guess technically if he is running up and down the street, then I guess that is not OK as ATV's are not street legal. That being said, in rural areas you see as many ATV's on county roads as you do cars and trucks sometimes.

An answer. Get the city's blessing and do it correctly!!!

He probably has the same opinion as I do after seeing all the damage out-of-control kids (and SPOILED adukts) do with them... just the SITE of a 4-wheeler, quad, ATV, or whatever the word is these days pi$$es me off!

The site of a garden tractor has NO such effect.

Depends some on state law--a "garden tractor" is a "implement of husbandry" and with a snowplow mounted is engaged in work defined as suitable for a "implement of husbandry" A ATV may be defined as a "reacreational vehicle" and no work activity is in its allowable definition of activity. To get sneaky, the ATVs like sister"s Yamaha with a PTO to drive sprayer becomes a "implement of husbandry" as power take off is a possible characteristic of a "implement of husbandry" Laws may have a "construdtion/landscaping/road maintenance" definition that say a "snow plow/loader" fits that class and notes skid steered Bobcats and "other" brands/power units are acceptable- the ATV like landlords with the small plow and a salt box then become legal to run/plow/clean on sidewalk and streets between clearing jobs. Might use that to aggravate the griper. RN

Could always try talking to the neighbor and see if can't calmly talk it out first.

If that doesn't work, get a snow blower and point the chute at his sidewalk.

I'm an easy going fella. On one hand we can do this my way, and on the other do it my way. Your choice.

There was an article in Oliver Heritage ( ?? I think) about 3 olivers that had been narrowed down and were fitted with those blades as well.. I think it was a 880 and a pair of super 88's maybe.. also in New York (I see the plate on the front LOL which was also mentioned in said article)

Also, thanks for the input guys, Like I said, it has nothing to do with me, other than I know the said complainer.. It just irks me I guess.. I was always told growin up "Clean the sXXt off your own doorstep, then go help the neighbors" I guess I never got what it meant till I got a bit older..

I guess I just wondered what everyone else thought, was everyone like this guy, or are more like me, who really don't care what the Joneses are doing, as long as it don't jeopardize my safety and well being

I think I have to agree with Bob on the psychological impact that ATV's have had on many people, and that is the irresponsible operation of them. Now we use both ATV's and horses up on the ranch. We keep the ATV's on the roads or what used to be roads when were locating cattle or having to move supplies a long way over bad terrain, and use the horses for actually running the cattle out of the canyons and remote or wilderness areas. But invariably we come across places where the people have come out and taken their ATV,s and torn holes in the trails and cut ruts across the meadows and just torn up the natural beauty. There have been a few that I know of that have experimented with how fast they will go when the rancher catches them chasing his cattle and the rancher has a saddle rifle. But I don't think they think it is fast enough. lol But that kind of activity can taint a persons attitude toward riders and operators of such machines. I am in favor of using what ever machine you have to clean, What did you call it? A side walk? I will have to look that up. and I don't understand why the neighbor gets angry about it when your doing him a favor. If it was some kid tearing up the front yard I would have a problem. Has anyone sat down with him in the off season and talked about the concerns over a cup of coffee or a glass of ice tea? I have found the worst time to try to hash something out is when the hair is up on the back of their neck. LarryT
