I am posting for a neighbor without internet. He is debating whether to buy a John Deere 8640 or 8650. He has an 8650 and is happy with it. The 8640 is for sale locally and cheaper. Appearance is good and motor has just been overhauled(major). He is concerned about the 8640 engine holding up.

My neighbor had a 8630 John Deere If I remember right JD put a 8650 engine and 4 pinion diff plus some other stuff for about 12000. I don't know what they did for 40's There was a lot of 8630's around here every one had been changed. Now everybody has traded them for a 8400 8530

the 8630 engine used a camshaft driven oil pump. it was their downfall. I think a few 8640's were built with the early engine but I believe most would have been updated when the 8630's were. check the engine serial #'s and parts but I don't think there will be any difference between an 8650 or 8640 engine
