Propane cylinder trade ins

Was talking to a store owner that has a couple racks of trade in cylinders. He says company supplying them now has reduced the amount of Gas you get. He says since they don't advertise as 20# cylinders they don't have to fill to specs as in the past. so now you get 18# for 20-- guess Ill go where they do fill them to be sure to get 20# cheaper anyway. I hate shopping but you have to read labels real careful if you want more for your buck.
Bought a 1lb can of PB Blaster thought half had leaked out (felt half empty) upon reading the 1lb can has only 11 oz now.

I have had that concern ever since they went to the opd valve, and when you exchange a tank is says right on the plastic sleeve net. wt. 15 lb. So, the only time I exchange a tank is when it is due for a inspection, (after 12 years) or some other reason I want to get rid of the tank, I had one that came with our Weber grill that was an od-ball. The guy at our local Cenex says he can get 20 lb. in most of the new tanks, and if you take 2 or more at a time there only $13!

The exchange places have been filling bottles to a lesser amount for 2-3 years now and the amount is clearly on the label.

A class action lawsuit against one company did give a few bucks back to some folk.

You do need to watch the poundage on the label as some don't even fill to 18#s, but rather 17 from what I've read elsewhere.

One of the smaller sizes that I did find noticeable was tuna. They actually use a smaller can now. Most canned vegetables have gone from 16 oz to less.

Yep, these days it takes an educated shopper to get the biggest bang for their buck.

Don't know why anyone would fall for that exchange tank scam, anyhow- around here, they get about 22 bucks exchange, but you can take your own tank to the service station and get it filled for less than 10. I guess "convenience" is worth a lot to some folks.

Once again, the consumer is considered to be all but illiterate. They have been doing a lot of "resizing" with many products, especially food products.
Check things like paper products. They make the packaging to look just like it always has, but they reduce the quantity. Ice cream is another example, it used to be a full gallon in that carton. If you do not read the fine print and look closely, it still "looks" like a gallon, but it is now less than a gallon.
This is another example of companies thinking that their money is more important than mine.

REALLY? 10 bucks? Heck we cant fill them for the price of swapping here! Best price I found on refilling was 22 bucks, swapping at the SAME place is 18, and they will weigh it first if you ask them.

This summer, i took my tank into the place where I get my Oxygen, as I use propane on the torch, as opposed to acetylene.. To fill my 20# tank was 9.00, IIRC

The government would like us to think the inflation rate is almost nill. But like the unenployment rate they manage to keep the numbers low when we know the situation is not as wonderful as reported. My wife has noticed the reduction of actual food in the cans now for about four years. Lots more water, filler, fewer ounces,,every trick in the book to get more profit and give you less product.

OK, I"m not a specialist on this type of material but things like propane, anhydrous ammonia and liquid nitrogen can not be contained so therefore tanks are filled to 80% which is a generic number, those type materials usually have a boiling point of somewhere around -450 degrees F so ambient temperatures affect them considerably so the amount of liquid can vary so I"m told. So I"m thinking you"ll get more in the winter months vs the hot weather months. I would suggest getting a weight ticket when you have a tank refilled which I do at our local Coop as far as an exchange I don"t know.

Really this is our own fault and a microcasm of the economic situation we are in right now. People are vehemently against raising the prices of anything and everything, sometimes just out of principle. If costs of production and distribution go up (and they do) about the only recourse other than raising prices is to offer less and charge the same.

It really is the same as insurance costs. You may have a rate that hasn't increased in a while but only if the things it actually covers has decreased. There is no free lunch and everyone needs to eat.

In my younger years I did haul 100 lb cylinders for home use, and filled them right at the shop + any 20 pounders I was to add 20 # to tare weight stamped on bottle to be full = 80% volume of liquid.

For those of you who do exchange tanks, please take the time and look at the tank you are picking up. I received information a couple of years ago about tanks that had a blueish residue on them. It seems that potheads are taking propane tanks and using them for anhydrous (sp) ammonia. The ammonia is caustic to the brass valve and the valve can rot off and explode. Please be careful as we don't want to hear of any accidents. Steven
