hay rake id ???

dug this out of the woods today, kind of think it may be an old allis rake. has 2 fixed wheels in the rear, one crazy wheel up front. pto driven, gear box has "tedder" high and low. any ideas?? prolly needs a couple a tubes in the tires and a few pumps of the grease gun!! couldnt find any id or tags

I beleave that that is a AC rake from the late 40's or early 50" that they used for the roto baler. Just about 99 percent sure.

AC for sure, Dad had one like that. And yes that is a crazy wheel up front.

I agree it's a Allis Chalmers, it has that funky ball hitch, had kinda a ring you lifted up and locked on Combines balers etc. all used them in the late 40's early 50's.

Never used but I would say worth fixing up, if you do not want to rake with it just use it to lift rained on hay to dry, nothing better if hay is in a winrow to dry out that winrow unless you get into something like the steel wheel No. 4 New Idea that operates the same except for being a ground drive and being a PTO drive that AC could tedd faster than the New Idea. And I do know where there is or was some used parts for it.

I would say yes it will rake for you, but don't plan on using it for a tedder, it is too long so it misses too much. If it were me I wouldn't want to get more than about $200.00 into it, so it would depend on what the tires cost you.

Allis Chalmers. I owned one. Was a decent rake. Most had only one wheel at the rear of the rake.Never saw one with two wheels on the rear. Am wondering if it was an option?

Yes it is an Allis. This one has the optional wheel on back, not sure if it is factory. AC made a lot if these rakes, the more collectable one came after this one and only has two wheels on the back and a single raking and tedding speed....only 2000 made. I have one of each, here's a pic of the rarer one.

That indeed is an AC Rake.Dad had one back in the '50's.Bought it at Hextell Imp. at Serena Ill. He farmed near Ottawa ILL. You must recognize those names? As a kid I had a hard time hooking it up to one of his tractors,but after hooking it up it sure was a good rake compared to the old converted to tractor use horse drawn rake JH

Same AC rake I grew up with, Dad had it by 1950. I don.t think it had a model number, just like the first picker on a WC, before the #33. Dual wheels were an option, but they were front and rear. Your rear dual is not factory. Crazy wheel because at road speed, the wheel would shimmy after rough ground...had to slow down to make it quit. Tedder feature was not intended to ted unraked hay- it was for fluffing up wet windrows to speed drying after a rain.

I like your terminology "funky ball hitch". It reminds me of the time in the early 60"s that Dad borrowed a rake just like this AC from a neighbor but I had to go get it. When I saw that ball hitch, I thought "how in the he@@ am I gonna hook that thing up?". I had to ask the neighbor about it, and I got the rake to our place. It did a pretty good job of raking the hay.
