Arizona to Oklahoma

We're traveling from Phoenix, Arizona to Oklahoma City in a few day and we're looking for sites to see. Traveling U.S. 40. Any recommendations. Thanks

Route 66 museum in Elk City OK is worth a stop. Setup like a old town with lots of displays, even has a vintage farming display. Tallest cross in the western hemisphere is in Texas, right on the interstate, you'll see it! Cadillac Ranch is also in Texas a little northwest of Amarillo. I've made that trek about eight times and try to find something everytime, with just not much luck!

You probably will see some "Winter" not to far from where you are at. The La Posada in Winslow is worth a stop and stay.We enjoy it much in the summer especially. It"s a restored Santa Fe Depot and Fred Harvey Restaurant Hotel from the 1920"s.Gallup N.M. is famous for it"s Indian trading posts.Lots to see around Albuquerce N.M. After that it will be snowy white maybe and brown ,brown, brown for sure.Winter time makes a trip thru that part of the country of east N.M.,north Panhandle Texas and into Orel Roberts Oklahoma country very boring IMO. You are at New River? We are at the east end of Az Route 74. We stay home in the winter except for Quartzsite which will be coming up soon. JH

American Quarter Horse Museum in Amarillo is always interesting, West Texas A&M College Museum in Canyon, TX is really interesting if you like western heritage stuff, it is off of I-40 on I-27 a few miles but well worth it. While you are there you might want to venture out to Palo Duro Canyon really a beautiful site to see.

I almost forgot take some music with you. If you don't have satellite radio, you wil get about 4 stations at a time on both bands combined. Two with preachers, one playing mexican, and one playing country. Nothing wrong with the latter, but options are always nice!

Newriverboy I just did it in reverse. Probably the most senic part was the Arizon end. Do not go up I 17 go out across country and hit 40 either at Winslow or Holbrook. The area (the rim) around Prescot Az is beautifull. As you leave Az on 40 you will be at the painted desert nice quick drive. Someone mentioned the mesuem at Elk city that was a nice 4 hrs. Can,t think of any reason someone in Phonix should go to Oklahoma this time of the year..O you will see lots of windmills.and some boring driving.

Check the weather before you go. Ice can be a real problem on I-40 this time of year. Texas panhandle drivers and icy interstate highways are a bad combination.

newriverboy, In Spite of the Moron below that thinks all Texas driver are incompetent, there are alot of good folks here in this part of Texas. There is a lot to see in the Texas Panhandle
Along your way on I-40 to OKC you can drift off of Interstate onto the Business Rt in the small towns especially and see Old Route 66. old Architecture, brick street, signs.
1,On the West side of Amarillo say about 2 mi.West and about 400 yds to the S. you will see Stanley Marsh's creation of Cadillac Ranch, (park and walk out to see, it is worth it 1 time)
2, The (AQHA) American Quarter Horse Assa located at 1600 Quarter Horse Trl in Amarillo , 806-376-4811, Always a good stop No matter how many times you stop.
3 Don & Sybil Harrington Discovery Center @
1200 Streit Drive in Amarillo, 806-355-9547
it is different and most always instresting. The Helium monument is here also.
4, Panhandle Plains Museum in Canyon Tx.(Downtown) 12 miles S. of Amarillo on US-287 History of the Panhandle Plains area from the first settlers to present You will need 2/3 of a day to do it justice.
5, Since you are at Canyon, Texas anyway take a fast run with the rest of the day into Palo Duro Canyon St Park. Palo Duro Canyon is 12 miles long and 20 miles wide at the widest part.
2nd Largest Canyon in the USA. The Famous JA Ranch (Charles Goodnight) Still encompasses part of it still today!
6, Big Texan Steak Ranch, Eat the 72 oz steak and all the trimmings in 1 hr and it is free!
Hope this gives you a little to do when you come to Texas on your way to OKC. Have fun, stay a while, Come back when you can.
Later,
John A.
