This is the St. Clair River a few years ago, looking from Canada to the USA. The St. Clair River is part of the Great Lakes System and plenty deep enough for ocean going ships.
They will load these ships with grain at Thunder Bay (The Lakehead) on Lake Superior then send them any where in the world during the open shipping season.
Here you can see where such a Lake Freighter, as much as 300 metres long got stuck in the river ice and had to call in ice breakers to free the ship.
