O.T. Mold on leather boots

I have a pair of wellington boots that haven't been worn in some time, and when I got them out they have turned moldy on the outside. What is the best way to clean them up before oiling them up. Thanks

Keep them oiled and in a dry place.

Is that synthetic stuff... I though Neats had gone extinct over 20 years ago and were a protected species MANY years before that?

My first question is are you sure it is mold?

Leather shoes, boots, etc. can form a white coating from perspiration or getting them wet and sometimes it won't show until later.

Cover in a big plastic tent, get everyone out of the house and call a licensed mold abatement specialist.
Don't let the EPA know you are trying home remedies.

Actually a neat is a common bovine.
There are still a lot of them around but they must be registered with the bovine police.
You are probably thinking of a 'Nauga' which were slaughtered to make auto seat covers.

Mark: will this lighten the leather? Interested because I've got some older holsters that have a bit of mold on them, and I'd rather they didn't have big light patches on them if I use this method.

Tim, my guess is probably not, but I've only used Clorox on oil-treated leather so I can't say for sure. I do know that oxalic acid will lighten leather; that's what is commonly used for that purpose.

Any leather you want to make last a Lifetime should be treated well with Snow-Seal..

Will keep the leather like fine harness leather.

I used to use Neatsfoot but it seemed to weaken the leather..

I warm the boots and let it Melt in and soak into the seams ..use a hair dryer if needed..
Let cool, wipe all excess off, polish with a rag..
The Beeswax in it is wonderful for the leather...

Take them outside, brush the mold off with a plastic brush, then treat with sno-seal or mink oil and as someone else mentioned, just wear them.

I agree that a few days of putting up square bales would shine them right up.
