OT 2008 Impala Heater

We have a 2008 Impala with a V6 motor. Since cold weather arrived, the heater blows cold air when idling. When driving, it works fine, it will cook you out, but if you stop and let it idle for a few minutes, it blows cold air. The wife ran into the grocery store last week and I sat outside listening to the radio, if I revved it up to 1500rpm it would blow warm air until I let off the gas. Always worked good until this winter, used to be able to remote start and have it warmed up when you get in, but not now. Temp guage is in the middle of the range but cold air comes out. What is wrong with it??? Thanks, Chris

marloweg and Lloyd combined have surely got that one right. I almost "froze to death" one winter while driving Freightliner. Motor temp gauge ran normal to cool and I just didn't realize the water level was as low as it was. When I did happen to check water level and added some, I HAD HEAT again!!

Check the coolant level by looking in the radiator itself, not the overflow reservoir. The symptoms you described can be caused by low coolant level in the radiator, causing the heater to blow cold air.

Air got trapped in heater core. their are bulletins about it. you could flush the heater core by disconneting the heater hoses. they are easy to get at. they are at the upper left side of the engine. you then reconnnect one hose and add coolent untill it runs out both sides of the one left off. reconnect and top off. when you look at it the heater lines are at the same height as the fill cap. when we drain the system for other repairs we use vac & fill tool to fill system. david

If it has the 3yr/36000 mile warranty, depending on when you purchased it and what the mileage is, warranty should cover any needed repairs.

My 03 Burrick has two little threaded pipe fittings on top of the intake manifold that must be opened when adding coolant. Otherwise you get an air block or fried head. Also if the air doors are vacuum operated you may have a leak. The air doors are spring loaded.

I should add this. from 2007 and on your gm engine, trans, and other drive train is covered under warrity for 5 years, 100000 miles. call them . they should cover it. when you are there ask for a copy of the warraty claims (viss). david

Let me guess, it's a 3.4 engine, right?

Probably a head gasket. Check you warranty.

OOh, I forgot about the intake manifold gasket. Mine leaked on the back left. (3.4) Just made it before the 30k warranty ran out. Also they had a habit of putting in wiring harnesses that were chincy and to short. When they replaced my intake manifold they tore the insulation on my cam sensor wire. No codes. Just wouldn't run right. My son in law is an Audi mechanic and he finally found it. Took him two days foolin' with it.

Sounds like it's low on coolant. The crossover cover on the front of the 3.5's always leak.GM has the updated gaskets.

"05 did the same,Tach got stuck on 3100RPM,temp guage went to the top,Gas guage bounced all over the dial, took to local fix it,Reset computor,no more problems.
