used your collective advice. Loosened belt, generator ran as motor. It now charges, however not as high outpuit as I expected. Possibly new brushes must wear in a bit. Thanks guys!!!!!

Thanks for the update.
Tweak the adjustment of the small coil which controls the field contact. The more tension holding the contacts together "tighter" should raise the voltage.
Of course if the battery is large,the battery's charge is low and system demand is high. It will take a while for system voltage to raise.
Worn pulleys or slack,glazed or worn belts will limit charging capacity.
 
no it's one I had on cockshutt 20 and just kept the belt tight with last 3 months. Though it was time to finish the regulator set up. I think I will put new bushing and front bearing inyours next week.. That rim is in very good shape
