i have a Jacobsen chief 1000 that i restored. it runs good except now that its cold it wont idal. we played around with it for a while and nothing happened. We think that because there is less air we need to adjust the air flow. Any ideas?

cold should be more air as cold air is dense more so than warm air. planes can take off using shorter runs in winter.

Hi you need to adjust the idle jet for a richer idle mixture cold air is more dense than warm thus making the mixture lean causing idle problems.

I think that is backwards.... yes cold air is denser, however to compensate for the dense air more fuel is needed, not more air. Hence is why a choke closes the air horn restricting air, and thereby increasing the fuel ratio. Richer mixtures for colder temps.

Besure your idle jets are not dirty, as this will restrict fuel and cause the mixture to be lean, and result in poor cold weather performance.

Try remove carefully idle screw. Squirt carb cleaner in hole. Do this two or three days. Then blow little compressed air in hole. Replace screw(count turns ahead of time) See if it helps/ Dave

How well does it run above idle? Any smoke coming out of the exhaust, particularly black?

I have one of these, believe it's a '67. I need two small parts for the shifter; would also be interested in any info you have on them. I have looked but not found much.

One time I did run across someone on ebay or some such that had a complete manual set on cd for sale. Lost the ad and haven't found it again.

Thanks and good luck!
