What a New Year!

Boy OH boy, came home from delevering hay this morning, had a quick lunch, checked this site, and kept hearing a running truck or something. I also heard a fire siren, well I look out my basement window and see a pickup parked in my wood lot. So I go out to see what is going on, as I have 2 trucks parked over there. Across the road my friend/neighbors house is on fire. I think 3 companies were there, I guess the double wall pipe had 2 45 degree elbows in it up in the attic maybe full of cresote??, the pipe was glowing when the trooper put a hole in the sheetrock and sprayed it. They saved his house, but it needs some repaires, his brother does construction, so he will do the work and my brother and I are going to help them out any way we can. Never a dull moment. Thats the 2nd or 3 fire on our street, all from double wall pipes in a chimmny chase. You would think it would be code to use masonary. Mine is block, flu block, and a clay liner. The other all 3 with a ss liner.

Were they burning wood? My chimney knowledge is pretty meager, but I thought triple wall was what you used when burning wood if it's not masonry. Too bad about the fire. It's something we all hope won't happen to us. Jim

JAY, go do the dishes for your wife ,we want her to take it easy, we will be watching so dont let her work to hard! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH!

Everything is ok, no one was hurt. My friend Joe was at work, so was his girlfriend. His father was there watching there 4 year old. A passerby claimed he saw smoke comming off the roof, beside the chimmney. His house is down way below road grade, so standing on the road you can see right over his roof, so I dont know how the passer by saw it. I think his dad called it in, but Im not sure.

I'm glad to hear all made it out ok with only minor damage considering the alternatives.

I had a friend, Jerry that was a volunteer fireman until he got too old and hung up the helmet for good. He was a little over ambitious when it came to fighting fires. If it was a shed fire out back, he would kick in the front door and turn on the hose from the time he entered, all the way through the house and out back to the shed. If it was a grease fire on a kitchen counter, he went through the roof with an axe, through the ceiling, and down to the kitchen. Great guy, but when folks used to call the station (before 9-1-1), they used to say "...and please don't bring Jerry with you...".

Are you sure it was double wall pipe and not triple wall. Triple wall pipe works on the principle of cooling the smoke to keep the heat from getting to the outside layer of the triple wall. Cooling the smoke causes creosote buildup. It's a lot cheaper to buy than double wall which is insulated between the layers to keep the heat inside away from the house framing. The smoke stays warm and carries the creosote up to the chimney cap where it condenses on the Cap and causes less draft. On my double wall I only needed to clean it once a year in the pipe, but the cap I could hit with a long stick from the ground to clean it.

Masonary can crack too... and is just as dangerous, if not worse. We've had a lot less trouble since we switched to the double wall insulated chimney. That said... if you get a few too many hot fires in one the inner pipe will eventually disintegrate. Seen a couple of those now so a person does need to inspect them closely every year. Still wouldn't go back to a masonary chimney. They take too long to ever get warm and have considerable problems with cresote for the reasons described already.
