Good Old Days in Kansas

Thanks, those are some really interesting photos!

Interesting how both steamers look like Minneapolis tractors...

Isn't that a Big 4 tractor hauling the wool??

I'm pretty close to Minneola - be interesting to know where that tractor wound up... Probably melted down in a WWII scrap drive... :(

Thanks, most of those I had never seen before and I've seen a lot of old ones.

Times and Remembrance a Kansas Legacy by Bobbie Pray contains a lot of good Kansas photos. She worked for the state historical society and definitely picked out good ones. I'm sure it is available through inter-library loan.

The rabbit drive photo surprised me a little as to how few the number of rabbits there were. Mom's old diaries from the 1930s tell of many drives with over 10,000 killed at each, with around 16,000 being the largest I remember reading of in them.

Very nice pics. I have always thought it would be fun if I could somehow travel back in time to those days with modern tractors, combines, and construction equipment. It still amazes me what these people were able to accomplish with little more than shear determination and minimal assistance from animals and equipment of the time. Today we have the tech. and equipment, but the will and determination of folks like those in the pics has turned into passiveness, expecting everything to come to us, without lifting a finger, no sacrifice, or even breaking a sweat to accomplish a goal, such as surviving hard times.
