Thinking about buying an Unimog 1955.Mercedes 4 cyl diesel not running.Would like to pull 5000lb loads (stock cars to the track) on a hilly road

What can you tell me about a Unimog?

Here in the Buffalo NY area, the city bought some Unimogs with plows after the Blizzard of '77. They were '78's and '79's. We ended up buying them from the city at auction, and we used them for yard vehicles at our salvage yard. They all had 6 cyl. Mercedes diesels, which were stubborn starters in cold weather. They were worth it though, because they would drive through anything and pull anything. I tried to get one licensed and registered, and then found out that they would take thousands of dollars each to bring them up to state laws and pollution standards. Just saying:)

Nebraska Tractor Test #607. Unimog 30 Diesel. March 1957.
1. 28.43 Belt HP 100% maximum load for 2 hrs. 12.48 Hp Hr/gal.
2. 20.57 drawbar HP under Test H=ten hr rated load. 11.42 hp hr/gal.
3. 24.01 HP pulling 4705 [email protected] mph with 13.99% wheel slip & 2554 crankshaft rpm.
Test vehicle weighed 6729lbs with operator however during test J the weight was reduced to 4987. Test J was an operating maximum load test that produced 25.02 HP pulling 2450 lbs @ 3.23mph with 5.5% wheel slip in 2d gear. UNIMOG 30s had a 4 cyl diesel engine mfg by Mercedes Benz I head with 2.950 bore and 3.937 stroke. 107.8 cu in of displacement. 12 volt electrics. It had 8 forward speeds the first 2 being creeper speeds followed by 6 numbered speeds. I used to see them around airports. Haven't seen one in years. They were marketed by JI CASE for a while.

Great vehicles. Among the best available with reagards to attachments and what they will do. They even have a snorkel so you can drive them underwater.

The main disadvatage is that parts and labor will be very high. There is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes. You will pay through the nose, but get good service in return IF the service people are good, and you know how to operate and care for it.

Having owned an older Mercedes diesel car, and looking at Bill(Wis) numbers below, I've gotta think it would pull 5000 lbs. in hilly country at about a brisk walking speed. Good on the farm, but not exactly what you'd want for highway work.

As a Car and Driver reviewer once said about diesel powered Mercedes cars, "This isn't life in the slow lane- its life in the bike path!"

When you mention life in the slow lane, the Unimog managed to eke out 4806 lbs of pull on the big sled at Nebraska at .61 mph. That was in 1st creeper gear. I would think that thing could win at those tractor "races" where they try to go slow. I think it would beat an Allis G.

I still have an 84 300D with 205,000 miles on it. I use it to drive to work in the summer. They are a bit slow to accelerate, but not so bad on the hwy. I bought it five years ago for $5,300, and have put almost 100K miles on it with nothing but basic maintenance and it still looks good and is worth what I have in it. It is a bigger comfortable car that gets about 30mgp on the hwy.

They are good cars, but they are not dragsters.

Had a 1978 Unimog at the airport I worked at for several years. It was all wheel drive and had a 13 speed transmission. It also had a front and rear pto. We used it to plow snow in the winter and cut grass in the summer. Very heavy duty and very versital. But like the others said, very expensive to repair.
