need a fast tractor

To avoid getting another truck and paying 2000 for insurance I"m looking for an older(cheaper) tractor that has a higher then normal speed.About 60 hp since it has to pull a 5000LB load over a hilly road
Which tractor would do the job?

In my opnion, 60 mph in/on a nonsupended vehicle would be sucicide. Keep in mind that at just 20 mph, a four inch drop is enough to roll over some tractors. The Minonites here who do not drive cars have about 30 hp tractors re-geared to about 35 mph and have more than their share of accidents. There is a English made ( I beleve) tractor called FASTRAC. it has suspension and can do about 50 mph. A neighbor (big operation) has two FENDT s' they are just used for road type work, manure tankers and mixer wagons. They will do about 32 mph. And he just totaled one when the load started to push him on a curve.
Also, I don't know where you live, or what the laws are there, but here, anything that has a road speed of over 35 mph is no longer a slow moving vehicle and is required to conform to the rules of cars and trucks. Like safety, lights, license and insurance.

JAOG, er, he didn't a say 60 MPH, he said 60 HP. Old silverkings had about a 25 mph road gear, if I remember right, and Centaurs had one that fast or faster. Both of them are less HP than you want though.

He did not say 60 mph. He said 60 horse power. Cousin has a 830 Case which he put 18-4-38 tires on. They are 63 hp and with them tires they will go about 25 mph. But I don't think that is enough hp to pull 5000 lbs. up much of a hill.

Regardless of brand, that 60 hp will not do very well pulling 5,000 pounds up any kind of hill, and most older tractors don't have the kind of brakes you would need to stop those 5,000 pounds.

A Farmall Super M with the governor turned up, Fire Crater Pistons, and 450 head/manifold/cam will run in the low 20-mph range and would have disc brakes. You could add enough weight to keep from sliding the tires most of the time.

Being blunt and cranky, I'll say this: How much life insurance do you carry? I'd suggest you buy more, and lots of liability insurance.

Look for an IH 856, 966, 1066, etc. Plenty of horsepower and they'll get right down the road too. 'Course if you are looking for something that will keep up with car and truck traffic, you'd best forget the tractor and buy another truck.

Some european tractors have about 30mph road gears, was a few posting on some German tractors that had front suspension and front brakes. In US? Friday and Loves from Michigan were built with higher speed road gears- one of their intended uses was hauling wagon loads of product to town canneries, etc and they were supposed to have fairly good brakes, might have had them on front. Ford sometimes get Sherman(?) over drive auxilary transmissions and Fergusons had a option for high spped -25 to 35 mph- gearing- maybe the same as Sherman type auxilary transmission. Couple of them in local area being used by drunks who"ve lost their license- no license required for "implement of husbandry" and sometimes a local bar parking lot is 1/2 full of tractors. UDLX(?) Moline was 35mph(?) and had a car type cab-but they"re not cheap. Some old cars, pickups converted to tractor- main example is Ford Model A with AA rear end and extra transmission- the term "Doodlebug" come to mind as a name for them-- local salvage yard has a example in the back section of farm equipment, has a wood cab, drawbar and 2 transmissions, front brakes and a hydraulic line toward back that has a SMV triangle. Legal status is supposed to be "Farm tractor/implement of husbandry" --maybe something like that for a winter project would be legal your area? Pickup frame, cab, extra tranny and truck axle solid mount at back, 3 pt hitch- maybe IHC engine and get state to call it a tractor/implement of husbandry. Big Versital(sic?) made with truck parts supposed to have a high road gear-but again not cheap. RN

What is an acceptable speed for your purposes?

You can get quite a bit of additional speed by going with oversize tires. The 1066 scoots right along in 4HI with 20.8x38 radials (18.4x38 bias ply were stock).

My Ford 9000 will do 20 MPH partly due to oversized wheels and tires. It came with 23.3 X 34 and it now has 20.8 x 38. You could do the same thing with many makes and models.

I would be very careful driving any tractor at a speed higher than about 25 mph. They just aren't designed for it. Their wheel base is to short, their center of gravity is too high, theres no suspension to cushion any bumps. The steering just isn't good enough and usually the brakes are only good enough to stop it from rolling. I can just see it heading for the ditch and rolling.

What state and county are you in? Cause I dont want to be within 100 miles of you going that fast on a hilly road with a load behind a tractor.

Can't you get farm plates for a truck allowing you to travel between farm and fields and farm to market(with in reason) Your farmers liability insurance would cover you the same as if you were driving an unlicenced tractor and had an accident.

I dont know if you recieved my email, my computer is not working right sometimes, if you did thats fine, if you did not, I dident want you to think I dident respond. May have to do coffee next year at DD, and thats not Dunkin Donuts! lol,,, J

Not knowing where you are, try "external_link" and put in your desired tractor and I'm pretty sure that you will find one kind of close to you. You can also try "external_link" to figure one close to your desired HP so you can then go tractorhouse to find one close to you. 60HP? There's a million of them in any color you want. If you are going to use it plenty, think in terms or parts and service. What dealership is near you for at least parts and availability?

WHERE ARE YOU AT? I know of several guys (sellers and repairers of used) around me that can fix you up right now, but I'm in north central Indiana.

Good luck.

He said that he wanted a higher road gear speed, but did not mention a specific speed. He mentioned 60...Horse Power though.

I think that you made the same mistake that many did.

I don't think it had than much HP but the fastest stock tractor I have ever been around was a Case 530 with the triple range trans. Road gear meant road gear on that thing and you had better hope it was good and straight in front of you. Guy I worked for in college had it and she would scoot, was great for jocky'n around empty tobacco wagons.

Is there more than one tranny for the 530? I just bought a 530 and I thought it had only 8 speeds. The RPM meter shows 1-8 on the gears. The lever on the right side of the tranny seems to have only 2 positions. Am I doing something wrong?

saw a farmall 400 I think and it was powered by a chrysler 318 and a automatic transmission coupled into the tractors transmission the owner hauled silage waggons with it and said it would go about 45 mph! im thinking she would be kind of twitchy at that speed though
