Ford 3000 ...temptation

Hey folks,
Local case/IH/Steyr dealer has a 75 ford 3000 diesel with cab, 48 hp, 3200 (documented) hours, 75%+ tires, and been through their shop (so they'll stand behind it). Price is 4500 euro. Original paint looks good as it seems to have been well taken care of (no noticeable dents/damage). No loader.
Price is 500-1000 euro nore than comparable IHC's with 50-65 hp w/ loader and around 8000 hours (and a few years older). They won't budge on the price, but I got this twinkle in my eye.

What would something like that go for in your areas?

Dave

Dunno where they are getting their hp numbers.
According to external_link a 3000 is about 47 at the flywheel but only about 35 at the drawbar.
Keep that in mind when you make your comparisons.
3000 is a great small tractor. They are entirely bulletproof, easy to work on and parts are readily available.
If you really had your heart set on a Ford and wanted to stay above 50 HP then a 4000 would be a better choice. 4000 has real brakes and is even easier to work on than a 3000.
4500 Euro X 1.3125 = about $5900. That's probably the top of the range here on a dealer's lot.
That tractor - generally without the cab - would sell in the $4500+ range here from a private party.

Sounds like a GREAT deal.. I have a 1972 Ford 3000 gas with dual spooler. It's used year round to mow grass and plow snow. Very easy to work on and is a good size tractor for general duties around the farm.

Fantastic tractor, for a small machine, we have had one since 1977 paid 3500 for it then and still would go for around 4000. They seem just a little proud of it but condition and documentation amount for something! Just my 2 cents

Check and see what type of antifreeze it has. I
know that sounds crazy, but those BSD blocks have an
issue with cavitation at the bottom of the bores.
Will basically ping through and put a hole in the
cylinder wall from the coolant side.

$6000 is a little high or very top of the range at a dealer but documented hrs and cab are nice to have and add value.
With no cab you can find them in the $4500 range.

Plus compair apples to apples with HP. A 3000 is considered a 35 to 40 hp tractor depending on what trans it has.

I assume it's a 8-speed with live PTO for that
price... I agree wiht the others that that is the
top end for price ,but 3200 documented hours is less
than 1/2 as many as any 3000 I've seen around here.
That diesel will go many thousands more with good
maintenance. Might be worth it.

I agree with Ultra, below.

Though the 3000, especially the late model version, is a great small tractor, the HP figure is too high as is the price.

Sold my 3000 two months ago for $2500 had used it for 14 years, my opinion is the 3000 is one of the best tractors ever made. Should of painted mine and put new decals on it and could have got $3500-4000 easy.

38hp at the pto.. if its 8 speed and live pto grab it... dont know about the cab, but around here its 4500 to 5500 pending on condition with out a cab. $7500 with a good loader. they will run 10,000 hours pretty easy. it is the 10 series or 3610 that had problems with cavitation, but keep good diesel rated antifreeze in it anyway. It will need weights to get max drawbar hp, but thats true on any tractor. fill the rears or add weights. It will be a life time tractor. Leaking brake seals are about the only nagging problem, but curable with new seals. Power steering is only power assist but still great for a smaller do it all tractor. you will find it is great for all the small chores. I even ran a small round baler with mine for several years, did miles of squares. Had a front end loader on it a beat the crap out of clearing land, but it held up and is still going. Your grand kids will be running it. the 3 pt is so good you can turn pages in a newspaper. I built tanks and graded waterways, and landscaping with it. best and most accurate 3 point I have ever used. Bill

That 3000 does not have brake seals. It has drum type brakes on the end of the axle.It does have axle seals that can leak oil onto the brake shoes.Good dependable tractors. However not the most desireable loader tractor.I would go up to a 4000 for that. The 3000 front axle is a little light for heavy loader work. You will want power steering.

I,ve got a nice 5000 with a quicktach loader and 3800 hours, ive been asking 5000us with no luck.

Thanks! I thought that was a lot. I didn't see the paperwork but on the titles, they are rated as both kw and PS (HP). 35kw is 48 (+/-) HP. They prolly mixed the numbers up. 35 HP isn't really that interesting to me. Nice tractor, but it doesn't justify the money.

You're in Germany? Where they rate tractors at the flywheel... rather than the PTO... so the power spec is about right.
Price is about right for here... Seen them go for a lot more with loaders and not in so great condition either.
I'd also expect it to be a fully optioned tractor in that market with 8 speed and live PTO, power steering, etc... but I suppose you should double check that.
Beyond that... I'd say if this tractor can do your work then I'd see no reason to go for an 8K hour IH that's been pounded to snot doing loader work. I'd see that as a gamble with you most likely coming out on the losing end... and having to spend big dollars down the road to rebuild a worn out tractor. If you needed the bigger tractor then take the chance. If you don't... and the little Ford looks good... go for it.

Neighbors dad had this tractor several years ago and sold it for $3500. That is US greenbacks.
In 2002 I think.
