photo 9, chopping cotton? looks more like hoeing cotton, although we dont do much cotton growing in western NY., bill m.

Thank you Wardner, those were very good. Look at how everyone dressed up just to go to a farm sale then. Very good look back at the era.

Great photos!Did you ever ask why in those days when we ate everything such as real milk,an all the other foods that had not been modified in some way or other we seemed to be not nearly as fat as today. There is not one person in these an other photos of that area that have overweight kids or adults.I know some is lack of activities but is that real reason?

It's called "chopping cotton" because they are chopping the weeds out of a cotton field, not the cotton itself. It's a southern thing!

I have been told that "chopping" cotton is not actually weeding. They planted it too thick back then so they would be assured of getting a stand. Then they came back through and thinned it out.

At least that's what I have heard.

Great pics. I find it ridiculous that they have to label the pictures as "...African American children fishing..." DUH! We can see they're black, why create more divisiveness by labeling people? Why not "...po'white trash eating meal in dugout..."???

Stuff like that just gets my goat.

The adults did real physical labor, and the older children helped. I'm pretty sure the younger children, that were not old enough to help, played outside becase there were no TV's or computers to sit in front of. In other words, yes, physical labor and active playing.

Blocking sugar-beets is similar to "chopping" cotton, if two sugar-beet plants are too close, they will NOT develop properly, so one has to go!

Hoeing sugar-beets comes later when the weeds begin to grow!

That is also similar to "thinning" apples on the trees. When the apples are developing in the early stages, if two are touching, one is removed, so when you go to pick/harvest the apples, you have a much better quality apple!

I trust this helps clear up the picture, Mr. Bill Smart!

Wardner first thought was one of the old trucks belonged to your grandparents. Must be wrong didn't see one with a bunch of modifications.

Sometimes, I have to tow this truck with the motorcycle. I like being prepared.

Thanks for the nice pictures Wardner.

I've got a torch head exactly like the one in pic #49.

Wardener, many thanks for the photos. I"m not an optical expert but to me these "old" Kodachrome pics have a "solidity" and "snap" that is unequalled in digital stuff.
Lots of character and dignity in those folks faces.

Did you pay a royalty to Paul Simon for using the subject title. Few if any musicians today can equal the great stuff he and others in his generation scripted. Instead we have Lady Gaga and others that are little if any better.

so they are thinning cotton, got it,still dont see why they just dont call it thinning but it must be a southern thing. Bill sMart, kinda like that! bill m.

Has difficult as times were in those days, some persons stood beside their partners through thick and thin making the best of what they had, being very proud, even if they did not have much!

These children seem to be, very bewildered and full of amazement with their surroundings as if they do not believe what they are looking at!

I have to agree, this is a great collection of pictures depicting an era gone by!

I have to wonder, how would today's society adapt to such a situation which the "Great Depression" presented?

dont think the cigarette in the last picture is going to hurt that guys lungs. Any body know what exactly he did?

Hard to say about a carbon black plant. They burn and handle a lot of stuff. Charcoal plants used to have guys that looked like that too. Sometimes missing a finger or two as well. Wasn't a job I wanted.
