When i try to access any site on my dell desktop
computer i get a white internet explorer page that says it can't access that site.It worked fine yesterday,my email works.Any ideas?

Go under internet explorer - tools and delete all cookies and temporary internet folders as well as broswing history . Mine acted up on a page once and that helped it . Not saying that that will help your problem ,but it can't hurt to try .

Take IE out of the equation. Open up a command window and try a few tests. (You can open a command window by selecting Start->Run... and typing "cmd" (and hit Enter).

See if you can lookup the site with the "nslookup" command. (Windows will look a little different than my Linux results below.)

[mark@leghorn ~]$ nslookup ytmag.com
Server: 209.183.33.23
Address: 209.183.33.23#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ytmag.com
Address: 67.132.201.2

Then see if you can do a traceroute to the site, using "tracert". (Linux calls this command "traceroute".)

[mark@leghorn ~]$ traceroute ytmag.com
traceroute to ytmag.com (67.132.201.2), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

My guess is one or both of these commands will fail. You may have to get up with your ISP to resolve the issue.

if you havent already done it...shut puter completely OFF for about 5 minutes and restart...that helps in most cases.

Hey Ray -

There are a lot things that could cause a similar symptom, but I've seen a lot of malware recently trying to hijack IE.

Since your email works, I'm guessing if you go to tools in IE, internet options, connections, lan settings, then make sure the "use proxy server" box is unchecked.

A lot of malware these days tries to situate itself as your proxy server (authority to control where you go on the internet) and essentially just winds up blocking everything...

There was something that came up on my computer that mentioned changing home pages or something.
Not sure what it was,but i hit the deny key.The proxy box is unchecked and i deleted the cookies and history, noluck.

Email programs and IE use different protocols when accessing the web. It"s possible that IE is misconfigured, usually caused by malware and spyware. 1st try clicking "start" > "control panel" > "internet options" then delete all browsing history then restart computer.

if a virus is involved, the best way to rid of it is by rebooting the OS in safe mode and run a full system scan using you AV software.

Try IE tools, options, advanced, and reset...

You can try it with and without 'delete all personal settings' depending on how bad you wanted to keep any of them and if it worked without checking it the first time.

If that doesn't work, you might try installing chrome or Firefox from a flash drive and seeing if it is IE itself that is broken or possibly inside Windows.

If it is Windows itself, I'm guessing you might have a more severe type of virus called a rootkit which is fairly bad news in that the easiest way to get around it is to reinstall Windows...

In Internet Explorer go to "Tools", "Internet Options" and "Connections". Click on LAN Settings.
The only box checked should "Automatically Detect Settings". If any box in the proxy setting is checked uncheck it.
You may have to get someone to download Malwarebytes Anti Malware and then install it on your computer. You should start your computer in the safe mode with networking to install the program.
