Should I make a adjustment?

Recently purchased a used 3pt log splitter. Older model, Northern Tool unit. Running it on my John Deere 4510 compact untility tractor (40 horse). So I set the throttle at 1,300 rpm's, and split wood. Every once and a while I hit a tough log that the splitter will not handle, however what happens is I hear the valve bypass (i think that is what is happening, howl coming from the valve) and it will not split.

When this occurs there is no difference in the engine,,,, purring along, does not seem under strain. Given this I'm thinking I should turn the relief valve pressure up some to increase the load?

If I over load the bucket on this machine, or even my backhoe attachment the engine will load up and work hard. The splitter seems to be licking out too easy??

Thoughts? Bad idea??

The first step might be to hook up a pressure gauge when using the different things to see where things are at now. The next step might be to try to find out what the splitter is designed to have. It would be a shame to turn up the pressure only to find out the structural parts of the splitter won't take it.

Check the pressure of the hydraulic system. There is probably nothing wrong with it. And by "cranking it up" you will just break something sooner.

Just because the tractor is 40 horse, doesn't automatically give you a huge tonnage splitter. The size of the ram and cylinder will really tell you how good of a splitter is. Not the motor size.

We have a 4320 Compact, it has 2800 to 3000 psi. It will open the gov when it bypasses. Our cylinder is 4 inch. It will split almost anything. The tractor has a little to much pressure for the splitter. It is getting broke and bent. But I love it. I would get a tee and a cheap 5000 psi pressure gauge

If the splitter has a seperate valve its probably that valve thats letting too much bypass. If it has its own relief you can add shims or see if the spring is bad the tractor still has its own relief.

I have one that i run on my 4710 or4700 , run it off of the power beyond .The valve on my splitter squeels if it stalls but the engine all ways sounds the same.I have thought about adjusting the relief valve but afraid it will bend or break something if i do ,it will split almost any thing i want now so why mess it up.
