anyone need a flashlight?

Most of my adult life, I have carried a pair of pliers, and a pocket knife. Usually a Shrade Rancher, with 3 blades. I have had a pair of pliers fall out of my suit jacket pocket, at church, and that was noisy, also I had the wife to contend with, for embassing us that way! I now carry a leatherman in a belt pouch, NOT AS HANDY AS THE OLD FARMERS PLIERS in the back pocket. The last 2 years, I cant get enough light to see well, on important things, like small cracks in metal, or broken wires in wire rope, which is why I retired from my Boeing job, as a overhead crane tech. Never did tell Boeing about it, didn't want them to freak out, and bring in outside vendors, to go over all the equipment, I had worked on. I always had another younger tech, that I could trust, double check things for me. It pays off to bring a youngster along, and teach him the trade. I never worried about him taking my job, like some guys used to warn me about.Anyway, I found that if I used a stylus led flashlight, that I could still see small stuff. It is about the size of a ballpoint pen, and carries in my shirt pocket, so I always have it with me. Even retired and at home, I still need it along, like to see to adjust chainsaw carbs,or anything small or in shaded areas. I just wondered if that is unique to me?, or does other folks have a light problem? My Glasses have been updated several times, but the problem never goes away.

I'm not too old (37) but I notice that I need more light to see small things now too. Not only more light but more precisely placed. The best light of all being sunlight but certain florescent light is good too. I have not found LED light to be satisfactory although it may be because I have only had cheap LED lights.

Ralph, I'm 67 and have carried small light for probably last 20 years. Even if not absolutely necessary, always handy. Also knife and very small screwdriver. Retired electrician. Feel naked without these items. Dave

Looking from the far side of sixty, more light helps. I found that the LED style light vary quite a bit in brightness (newer seems better?). Another handy tool is the magnifier on an arm, with a circular light around it. Mounted right to my bench, I can adjust it and tilt it, and I can get a lot more done when I can see what I'm doing - LOL.

Age does effect your sight but in my case Diabetes has taken its toll. I too use a small Led flash light several times a day as a sight aid. I recently found a small flash light that is about 1 1/4" X 4" and is powered by 3 AAA batterys and it gives off a very good bright lite. I have about 6-8 spread around and one is at hand when ever I need it. They fit in the pliar pocket of my bibs or jeans and are handy.

I retired from the maint. dept. of a paper mill 1 1/2 years ago, did a lot of crane inspections too, always carried a maglight. Guys used to tease me about my little light, but then they would want to borrow it! I still carry some kind of a light most of the time, especially in the fall-winter when the days are way too short!

Other than the job you did, I could sign my name to your post. I'm 61, and the lights are dimming fast.

My son used to paint water towers, and it was a must for every man to have a leatherman on them at all times.

I dislike the super tools ability to wear out the inside of my pocket real often. I have four of the super tools, and don't want to replace them with the wave, or any other one due to the cost.

When I put my carpender apron on, there is not room for a leatherman pouch. The leatherman isn't the best tool for the job often, but at my age, it sure beats walking over and getting the better tool.

Did you know the price of your leatherman has alot to do with your zip code?

all the time...had cataract surgery on both eyes about 8 years ago...lost all my up close vision but i can see a bee peeing on a flower a mile away now.
always a flashlite and magnifying glass close by...just turned 60 last month...its an adventure tryin to figure out what else i'm gonna have to learn to do without.

Say guys. I bought my Son a band light that goes on head (Elastic band)#3 led head lamp. He uses it to clean the puppys ears .It saves trying to hold a light when doing any work requiring BOTH HANDS. Really Neat thing and truly in-expensive. Might give that a try. Reguards LOU.

I had several Leatherman Super tools. Liked them real well. Few years ago had a girlfriend give me a "Surge" model. HUGE improvement over the old supertool. Spendy, but well worth it...

I have a LED headlamp that I use working at night or under equipment. VERY handy. Has a spring loaded-retracting headband so it fits in a pocket when I don't need it.

My phone has a flashlight, I use it at least several times a day.. As I get older, I need a bright light at times.

i either carry a mini-mag lite on a belt holster, or, i picked up a 9 led mini lite from napa. about 5 dollars, uses 3 aaa batteries. our tow truck drivers found deer hunting baseball style hats at wal mart that have 2 led lights in the brim. quite brite for there size and they use them at nite when out on road service calls. the hats are camo and in the sporting goods dept.

I also at 55 years old just started carrying the 9 led light in my pocket 24-7. They were 99 cents so i bought 5 and were given 3 more. Have one in every truck. I need light. I have the magnifier in the garage and basement by my computer. Ive also been carrying a swiss army for 30 years.

I carry the "free" light from Harbor Freight, in my jacket pocket. I prefer the Gerber blunt nose pliers, in a pouch on my belt. Without the both of them, I am not complete!

I got the new bifocal type of contact lenses about a year ago. It turns out they are not really bifocal, they work according to the amount of light they let in. About crane work, we have a puller in the area that operated a construction crane in Boston for many years. He wanted to retire at 60 but they wouldn't replace him. He kept asking and they kept putting him off. Finally approaching 70 he gave them a date and told them replacement or not he wouldn't be there after that date.

The best kind of flashlight I've ever owned is a streamlight called luxeon jr. I use it everyday and the beam puts out a perfect white light. It has been dropped from a 30 ft skyjack and has fallen into a jet fuel trailer. It still works as it did when new. I don't carry a leatherman but still use the gerber I was issued by the army in 1991. When I'm working I also always have a pair of small sidecutters in my back pocket. Loosing your sight sucks, I'm down to 3% vision and I'm only 41 but there's not much I can do about it.

I have an LED head lamp that I'm staring to carry almost daily.

The brand is Black Diamond. I use it all the time. Popular with cavers.

Together with my Leatherman Surge, I'm ready for anything.

I carry a mag lite in a case on my belt with rechargeable AA batts. Put my headlite on my hat, with rechargeable batts, at night when working outside. I carry either a mini mag light or a habor frt freebe in my dress clothes. I saved the day last Sat. night when I pulled my swiss army knife out of my suit pants with my bottle opener which I never walk out the door without.

Just about everyone of our techs in our AG shop carry a pen light, maybe 3/8 inch thick, in their shirt pocket. They are really handy. These have a JD logo on them and cost about $20. Made by streamlight. Says stylus on the clip.

Young or old, we all carry them.

Definitely talk to an ophthalmologist (not optometrist) if you're worried; the best possible outcome is that you pay for a check up and are told everything is normal.

That said, your pupils won't open as wide as they did when you were younger. It usually starts sometime in your 40's. Brighter light will compensate for it.

I keep one of those small lights that clip onto your cap visor, on about three different caps. The new ones clip onto the TOP of the visor so you don't even know they are there.

I carry a Streamlight Stinger all day, every day. I have a holster on my belt. This flashlight has two battery packs so I can use it all day. I bought one for each of my techs for Christmas this year. We no longer have AC powered lights all over the shop. The Streamlight is expensive but worth it. At fifty-five I also suffer from declining eye sight among other things.

At 60 I have same problem , also carry flex tip led pen lite , combine that with needed by-focals and makes it real PITH to work on anything anymore. That's why we have to retire , it takes us 8 hrs to do 4hrs worth of work so we have no time for outside employment anymore and still get stuff done at home. Anymore I paint by memory and have my wife "double check" everything. Just have to accept your limitations and don't endanger anyone or anything trying to do what you did when 25. On the "plus" side , people don't really expect as much from you as they used to and it's kind of nice to watch the " young'ins" pitch in and do some of them jobs you hated anyway. From 60 - 80 one better start enjoying the fruits of ones labor because that will be a "short" 20 yrs. Yea it's hard when you're a perfectionist to stand by and let someone else take over. Who knows , maybe they are even more of a perfectionist than you ever thought! Let it go! You are supposed to have "hobbies" by now , where your "age restrictions" will have fewer or less dangerous consequences.Real men know when to stand back!

(quoted from post at 22:52:19 12/23/10) Say guys. I bought my Son a band light that goes on head (Elastic band)#3 led head lamp. I purchased a light like this that just clips onto the bill of any baseball hat. I love it when I need to feel the chickens, rabbits, and pheasants after I get off work. Cost was just over 5 dollars.

Our local fire department just oredered 24 flashlights for our helmets, they are LED, and at a cost of $75.00 each.

I have been forced to use a head band led flashlight for years, very wonderful invention, other than many of them can get bumped, and turned on. This usualy happens in my pocket, not when I'm wearing it.

We have a silica sand mine a few miles from town, and I see they wear the same units. One guy said batteries last two weeks being on for 8 hrs each day.

Is there something we need to know about you? Why do you "feel" the animals when you get off work? How does the animals "feel" about that? LOL JUST KIDDING!! I'm sure you meant "feed" right? You did didn't you? Merry Christmas Mike

I got so aggravated that I replaced almost every bulb fixture with florescent and have head harness led lights on/in everything that has wheels and on the two saddles we use. Got a bunch of the little shotgun shell size LED lights that HF puts on sale all the time and have one in every jacket pocket and a couple laying around the house. Also have several of the little hand crank LED's in the vehicles and a couple in the house.

I get crabby if I can't hear, but if I can't see, you don't want to be around me.

Dave

I have evaluated a number of LED flashlights. Most, even the multiple LED lights aren"t worth the time. I did find one that makes me happy. Sold under the name of ELEMENT, only source I have found is Sam"s club. Has only one LED, but it is BRIGHT. Has a parobloic reflector which probably helps. Made of heavy aluminum, better construction than a MagLite. Have about a dozen scattered around the farm. Every car, etc. Often have one in my pocket.

Oh, and I carry a Leatherman religiously. Use it probably half a dozen times a day for something. Won"t be without it.

Tote a mini mag in a holster on my belt,,, tried the streamlite,,, after 5 are 6 of'em at $20 a pop I went back to the mini mag with rechargeable bats...

Don't tote pliers,,, if I did I would fudge up to much stuff,,, have a small screwdriver and a extend able magnet in my shirt pocket... A sharp knife.

In my tow truck theirs a pair of pliers, side cutters along with a GM battery wrench,,, if that do get it going it needs to come back the the shop on the hook......

I carry a 2 cell AAA mini MagLite with an LED conversion clipped to the edge of my pocket, and a Gerber multi tool on my belt. I like it better than a Leatherman becuse all it takes is a snap of the wrist to open the pliers, which is the part I use the most.

I always carry a Mini maglite on my belt. I was playing with my 18 month old grandson about a year ago and used it to see where the little car went under the love seat. A couple weeks later we were pushing the little car back and forth when he got a look on his face and rolled the car under the love seat on purpose.I was laying on my side on the floor. He came behind me and started pushing till I rolled onto my belly. He grabbed my light and a monster was created. Now a year later He came over with his little sister and was soon grabbing for my light. It was let him play with it or listen to him scream ( I pick my battles). When he went home I realized I didn't know where my light was. It took a week for us to find it. I was naked the whole time, Its like wearing a watch for years and then not having it.
My light gets used many times a day.
