Tractors Rats

I am sure this has been covered dozens of times but I will go ahead and ask. As with anyone who has tractors sitting in the pastures or in the barns, I have problems with mice, rats, snakes, possums building nests on top of the engine or in the dash or any other compartment they can find. Any solutions to help detour them. I had heard to take a sock filled with mothballs and hang under the dash and in the engine compartment. Any recommendations? Thanks

Take your shop vac to the drill and clean the box. No food no mice.

dang rats and mice eat the barns up around here in the winter,Ive never figured out though why the stinking things eat wire!i honestly dont have much trouble if all thats in the barn is tractors and things,but if you stack anything along the walls that they can hide in you have them here.ive never found any way of keeping them out besides just keeping everything they can nest in outside.

I have one tractor that I always leave outside and constatnely have rats nesting on top of the eengine and under the dash. Same thing if I put it in the barn.

My wife bought those electric gizmo's you plug in the outlet that are supposed to repell the mice via sound waves........... so far so good. Last winter we had mice in the barn, no signs so far!

I like the idea of the electric gizmo's, but I have no power in my barn.

I solved the problem by removing the seed tubes from the feed outlets and let them dangle.

They make battery powered ones. They have motion activation sensors. I think Northern sells them. We have a couple at our cabin in the mountains that has no electricity. Seem to work well.
My Snowbird Uncle had rats get into his barn stored pickup last winter. Sprinkled mothballs around the engine compartment to try and keep em away...

I have had some luck with cloths dryer sheets scattered between layers, or rows in my hay barn, as the mice kept chewing the twine. The side I dident put them, the mice chewed the twine.

I've found a grain drill makes a geat home for rats and mice reguardless of seed left or not. I keep mine inside and leave the drill covers up and they won't next in an open area.

I haven't had problems with rodents on tractors but every spring I have problems with robins wanting to build nests either on the govenors or over the oil fill cap. They are quite persistant. I had something build a nestone spring on top of the manifold of my 300U and caught fire, right next to the gas tank.Fortuneately tractor and owner both survived.

took the rad cap off an 8n a few years ago, mouse looked up at me, put the cap back on and left him alone.

Like when you start up the Deere Vac planter for the first time in the spring and the fan sprays bits of mouse nest sprinkled with bits of ground mouse against the inside of the screen that's supposed to keep them out?

Plain old D-Con (sp) works for the mice on my farm. There might be a stinky dead mouse holed up somewhere but they usually don't live long enough to make a nest or do much chewing.

My neighbor climbed up on his Gleaner L2 in a dark shed and opened the hood. Four coons jumped out of the engine compartment and brushed by him during their get-away. I was on the ground looking up and thought I might have to catch him on the way down. Jim

The JD R I have came from North Dakota and had sat for 14 years in the same shed, according to the neighbors. The radiator cap was off and the entire top of the rad was completely full of rat nest. Took a long time to fish most of it out. When I got it home I had to replace the rad core because the old steel one had rusted out, and there was still a bunch of nest in there that I missed the first time. Boy did it stink! Jim

Barncats work for me. I feed them some cat food every morning and at night during winter storms or below zero and never pet them. Petting them makes them stupid, keep them wild.

Cotton ball doused with peppermint oil will keep mice out. Keep cottonball in small open jar.

reminds me of the time dad came dragging a old jd "a" home.engine would turn over maybe 1/4 turn either way ,so we figured it had a rod broke.pulled the head off and one cyl was completly full of rats nest.cleaned it out and ran that tractor for several years.never did figure out how they could have got in there.
