1986 Chevy S 10 Blazer Starter On A 2.8

A friend of mine has a Chevy, S10 Blazer 4x4 with a 2.8 engine and auto. transmission . He says that the motor will turn over , but as soon as the motor turns over a few times and starts to start , the starter kicks out. How hard is it to change the starter on this vechile and what tools and what size tools will I need provided that no one has changed anything on the starter ? Does this sound like the solenoid or bendix ? While motor runs the heads / head gaskets are bad as they have to add water ever so many miles . Yes , I know they need to junk it , but when it's all you got then it's all you got .Thanks for any and all help .

I'm the original guy that wants to preserve anything with ANY use and keep it on the road!

However, the vehicle you posted about needs to die a clean death ASAP and be recycled!

BTW, there's NO reason for a manufacturer to hang a starter in mdi-air and build an entire vehicle around it, as was done with the S-10.

Bob,

While it might be truthful, it wasn't what I was looking for , but thanks for that thoughtful answer . However ,like I said when it's all that you've got ,it's all that you've got.

I know the exhaust is in the way. The starter wont just drop down on the 4x4. ask me how i know. The 2 wheel drives will. I still drive a 84 s-10 with the 2.8 in it. I bought it cheap and it had a brand new motor in it with 13,000 miles on a long block. I have almost 80,000 on the engine 200,000 on the truck and it looks bad.It keeps my snow free truck nice in the garage. If it wasnt for the new motor it would have been recycled long ago.

I don't know where you are located but I have a 2.8 out of a chevy s10 I will sell cheap. Either parts or whole. I'm located in northern NJ.

I rebuilt the starter in my old S-10 with a 2.8. It was easy. I believe two through bolts and the starter seperates. I put in a new bendix, brushes, regrooved where the brushes ride and put new grease in the end bushings. I thought it was pretty straight forward. Hope this helps. Gerard

Speaking of "when it's all that you've got, it's all that you've got" I (stupidly) drive a Dorf 'Sploder that eats clutch slave cylinders like jelly beans.

This is another case of "hang the part in the air and then build the rest of the vehicle around it", as it is INSIDE the flywheel housing!

What a piece of CRAP!

I had a '86 4x4 S10. There's a cross member that has to come out if I remember right. Only 4 bolts on the cross member, so it wasn't too bad. The bolt on the side of the starter next to the block is easier to work on with one of those Craftsman wrenches that's kind of C shaped. Trying to remember something I did nearly 20 years ago, so take it for what it's worth. Jim.
