I was just given a 856 IH tractor, it all seems to be in good shape. But it seem to slip out of high sometime and get suck between them. I have only work on deere tractors so this is a little new to me. I have tried to adjust the linkages works for awhile then goes back to same o operation. And advise on fixing this would be great thank you

I am in the last stages of rebuilding an 856, also my first IH of that series. Mine had similar problems with the transmission.
First thing would be to remove the cowl sheetmetal and inspect the shift linkage bushings.
There are a couple of bushings mounted in sheetmetal brackets in the upper cowl area that break up and cause sloppy shift linkage.

Also with the floor plate removed, remove the range trans (rear transmission cover) shift linkage and shift the lever through L-N-H. The lever should have a distinct snap into each gear, otherwise the shift detent parts on the underside of the cover may be worn or broken as mine were. (common problem on that model.)

New shift detent parts are pretty pricy, but I found excellent ones at a salvage yard for 20% of new.

I also rebuilt the shift detents in the range trans,(under the steering pedistal).

Not that hard to work on and now a real joy to shift.

I have lost the ability to shift into reverse. I am getting ready to remove that cover to check it out. I do not feel a snap when in goes into position. It was popping out of reverse alot and now it wont go in at all. What am I getting myself into? I have also lost 4th gear on the range shifter. Love the motor in this tractor, not very happy with the tranny.
