Can anyone tell me what rearends (yearspan) will swap out on a 97 kia sportage. My little car is coming on 14yrs old and and has a couple spots of surface rust but the rear diff is rusted thru and dripping.

Thanks,

Dave

I'm pretty sure they are all the same from 1996 to 2002. Only difference is they came standard with an open-diff, and optional with a locking-diff. Automatic, standard, 2WD and 4WD all came with 4.77 to 1 ratio.

I've already fixed two rust-hole leakers in mine. One in the engine oil-pan and one in the diff. Just roughed it up, got it into a warm shop, and sealed with JB Weld. Then coated it with Zero Rust. I did the oil pan three years ago, it gets driven on salt all winter, and never again leaked a drop.

Fenders are half gone and I've replaced all the brake lines, but still runs and drives perfect.

That simple??
Thanks!I'll sure try it.

Got a trick to improve gas mileage? I get about 15-17mpg driving 10miles RT for work and making my daily rounds doing chores and 21 or so if I can get a tank with complete autobahn miles. Is that about right?

Yes. I don't think a Sportage can do any better because of the gearing. If it had steeper gears and the RPMs could come down to 2200 at 65 MPH, it would probaably get 25-26 MPG instead of 20 MPG. Mine turns 3200 RPM at 65 MPH and I assume they are all like that.

Our "new" 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback with the 2.5 engine is also getting a best of 20 MPG in winter driving. It too is geared to high. Spins 2750 RPM at 65 MPH. At least the Kia has an excuse due to the small 2 liter engine. But this Subaru is overpowered and could easily handle taller gearing.

My wife's parents have a new Ford AWD Escape with the 2.5 liter four and 6 speed trans. They've gotten 29 MPG with it on highway trips and five passengers on board. I find that impressive. Who would of thought a Ford SUV would get better fuel mileage than a Subaru?

I miss my old Subaru 4WD Loyale wagons with 1.8 engines. 25-26 MPG all winter on highway trips. Close to 30 MPG in the summer and true 4WD -not AWD.

Cleaned things up today and it's worse than originally thought. Drips a couple drops a minute now and really hard to pinpoint a certain spot. What if I just drain it and pump it full of grease? Car is not worth a new rearend and I can't find a used one at the moment (stuff gets ground up real quick here).

Thanks, Dave

Are you interested in one from the states, ohio? Just bought the spair tire mount off one to modify for my truck.

I don't know how I'd get it over here........ I'm sure there is one to be found here, just a matter of finding it. Junk yards are few and far between because of environmental issues. Stuff is usually just scrapped imediately if older than a couple years.
