Engine quit suddenly won't restart

While warming up my old Ford 640 the other day, it suddenly quit and would not restart. I cleaned fuel filter and checked for spark. Still nothing. I"m embarrased, I mean this is a straight forward simple engine. Up to this time, she would start in an instant and purr like a kitten. What have I overlooked?

sounds like it run outta gas for one reason or another do the usuall make sure your getting fuel all the way through and make sure you got good spark im not familiar with the fords i assume this is a gas tractor check the needle valve ive had the rubber tipped ones swell up a pop out shutting the fuel off completely

JayinNY;
Thanks for the tip. I'll pull a plug and check for gas. The tractor is in South Georgia, so frozen gas should not be a problem.

A small engine mechanic taught me to use starting fluid. If the engine starts, it tells you the engine is in fair shape and that you have spark.

Just for the heck of it,take the breather tube off the carb and hold your hand over the carb throat while you crank on it.

When this happens on my older gas tractors it is quite often a condenser gone bad in the distributor.

Easy and inexpensive to change.

Easiest trick in the book. It will either fire, or it won't. If it fires, fuel problem. If it don't fire, look at ignition or kill. Just a simple shot of ether down the carb throat. Varoom, or not.

have same problem on my 640 , needs to have fuel shut off replaced, if you open it up by hand and dont use screwdriver to tighten to keep it open it will vibrate itself shut - engine dies, wont restart, first time I learned that I was pushing it out of road while pushing snow.Got it off edge of road, tried jumping, nothing, OK back to basics, checked for spark - good, then checked for fuel, nope, had plenty of gas, finally looked at shut off, was vibrated closed. Check for fuel then spark, HTH

If the fuel valve moves on its own the o ring is worn out.My 640 will and bale hay with the fuel valve open 1 turn.Opening it all the way just wears the o ring.
