John Deere 1010R

I have bought a John Deere 1010R and guys are telling me I better get rid of it because they have a lot of problems. Is this true? It is in pretty good shape and really runs good so I don't know what to do with it. Can anyone tell me what years they were made and if they have that many problems?? Thanks, Terry

The ones that are all saying that are the ones that want the 3010 and up tractors and for me that is the only model new generation tractor that I would have ever bought as to me the 3010-3020-4010-4020 that they all think are so great I would not own one of them and I was a Deere person with the 2 cylinders but they lost me as a customer. When I needed a tractor in the 3010-3020 size I went to Ford with a 5000. Lot beter tractor than the 3020 of my uncle or the 2020 at work. The engine deck plate is no longer avaible but with just a small bore job it is replaced with the 145 engine deck plate and that makes it the same engine used on most of the 45 series combines and they lasted for years. My Deere repairman at dealer also farmed and he had a 1010 row crop utility that he put in a 45 combine engine and with all gunuine deere parts he had that 1010 puting out 60 HP on the Pto and pulled 3-14" all the time with no problems.

Diesel engine 1010's have a worse reputation than gasoline models. 1010's didn't have very good brakes or hyd systems when brand new.

I think the 40 combine used the same engine as the 1010 didn't it? And the 2010 had the 45 engine?
I had a 40 square back here that I took the motor off of before I scrapped it. My brother bought a 2010 with a cracked head. I used the 40 combine head on it,but it wasn't as tall. It fit,but I had to use the head bolts from the 40 engine.

Depends on how you are going to use it. If for only occasional use, keep it. If you intend to use it more and will depend on it, then trade it. They were built from 1960 to 1963.

I kinda like 1010's they are a 430 with a 4 cyl motor,The motor is basically the same size as the 430 only 4 cyl, so it doesn't have much torque. The guys on here are right with a combine motor they are a fine little tractor. A lot better than a 2010. There is no place to start with them. When we decide that a 10 series JD is a antique I'm going to make a puller out of a 1010. Should be completive with those pesky Fords, Allis and IHC in the 3500 to 4000 lbs. class

Yes it was the same as the 40 and the first square back 45 used basicaly the same engine, 165, but with a different bore deck plate. Put that 165 bore plate in and you would have a power house and nobody without tearing it down would know what was done.
