OT---Wild Hogs Eating Pecans--Down South

Have you had any problem with wild hogs eating your pecan crop? I was down at the farm during Thanksgiving and although the crop is sparse, a few trees had produced pecans (based on the empty shells on the tree) but I could not find pecans on the ground. I did see lots of rooted up turf which looked like there had been hogs. The hogs are very common in that area. (Texas)
Not far from the Howell's Estate.
What are we gonna do with them Hogs?

Sorry to hear about your pecans.

Not sure what we're going to do about the wild hogs; unfortunately the problem is only getting worse.

The wild hogs have rooted around our large oak trees and black walnut trees.

They have rooted in the every pasture and anywhere else they please.

Nancy bought some pig bait and plans to serve it up to them in the next few weeks.

Only problem is that the bait also attracts deer.

If the trees are planted in line couldn't ya put up low profile hog fence ( Wire about 10" off ground) electrify it ?

Another Idea A motion device that would maybe keep them away like a sound of Dogs or something annoying to them.

We have an orchard near here and they have mild traffic past the house,--- on their porch is a motion detector aimed at the road when driving by It sounds like a helicopter taking off. Keeps the birds off their fruit.

I am in Wills Pont, Texas and in the creek bottom on the Sabine River the hogs are everywhere. My cousin traps them and one night he caught nine. He dresses them out himself and cooks them in a big pit.

I cleaned one myself, dont care to do that again. Fleas were all over it and then you have the blood and guts to deal with.

Pig barbecue. Start with a .30 caliber bullet at 125 grains on up to ?? 220. Check the old German and Polish recipes for wild boar preperation- as in salt water rinse, quick parboil then slow smoking-- seems like a old southern barbecue basic. Some postings lately regarding live trapping of younger feral hogs in overgrown Hav-A-Harts, other postings about hog pens and baiting, driving big ones. Couple queries regarding state games laws and limits--locally the Iowa county DNR says classed as nuisance, no limits, just get permission from farmers before going on property and have a small game license. DNR would like some reporting info and is concerned about psuedorabies in ferals so a brain sample is appreciated. Might get to do a night hunt with big flashlight or laser sights. New Years hog roast might be in near future for some of the ground rooters- they"ll be guest of honor(main course). RN

I"m sure there are a number of people that would love to hunt them, myself included, but most areas are cost prohibitive to the average joe. What is required is permission to do so from the land owner and not have to go through an outfitter/guide.

i been putting up 28" hog wire around perimeter of place...sure has slowed em down...i still got south fence and a couple gullies left to do but so far they aint gettin thru whats up.

You may be lucky to still have your Pecan trees.
These are pics from northern Florida in 2009.

I would be EXTREMELY unhappy if any of the wild hogs around our place were that size.

I would never leave the house without my 30.06.

Nothing you can do with hogs that size. I"ve been told the meat is rank on anything over 150 lbs.

That one would probably be as tough as wang leather (as my dad would say).

I have had problems in the past with them in watermelons and cantaloupes. I have used several things with mixed luck. Gut shooting them and letting one squell for 20 to 30 minutes will run them off for 6 months to a years. A 100 mile fence box on 4 miles of wire will keep them away for a while. What has been most effective has been someone tracking and trapping them with dogs.

I recently booked a hunt with "Tactical Hog Hunting" here in Houston. They provide state of the art Gen 3 night vision goggles, Starlight scopes on AR15's and thermal imaging scopes on AR10's. The outfitter drove us around in the pitch black until we found the hogs. So long as we stayed down wind we could walk within 50-60 yards and drop them in their tracks. Even then they would only run a little ways and we shot some more. The hogs do a tremendous amount of damage to golf courses, road right of ways, rice, corn, milo, etc and are even coming into the subdivisions. I see several dead on the road regularly. They are real hard on cars when you hit one. For those that don't think that this is very sporting, it's not, but it is big fun. The hogs here are in the same category as rats.
