OT-Hunters for the Hungry

Heard about this on the news over the week end. It was started by a teenager who loves to hunt, but wouldn't waste meat. Now its just about nation wide.

Here's how it works, when folks who love to hunt have all the meat they want, they can continue to take game (up to the legal limit) and donate the meat. Many food banks, the Salvation Army, Veterans of America, etc. gladly accept the packaged meat.

Some of the chapters will help pay processing costs and then deliver the meat to organizations on their lists.

Cool idea.

In MO. we have had a similar program for years. It is called "Share the harvest", through donations they have the program now to where it pays the biggest part of the processing. Just drop your deer off at the local butcher and they take care of the rest.

Very successful program.

I really like that program, consider it a win win for the hungry and hunters and society. (I happen to place a higher value on human life then animal life). I just hope n pray libs such as the militant vegetarian animal rights groups dont put an end to it......

Merry Christmas Yall

Wonder how many of the "HUNGRY" would work at the processor in exchange for part of the meat?
Or do other jobs to help the program?
Just wondering,I've had some, dealings with somethings like this.

The world will never be without lazy people, but not all homeless are lazy. The ones that bilk the system make it difficult for the ones who really need the help.

Its not for us to make that judgment, but to share what we can with those who are less fortunate. If those that we share with come by the gift through illicit means or use it wrongly, then they will have to explain that to God. That is far worse than anything I could do.

Its up to me to make the judgement to where my time, effort and $$$ will be directed and no one else's.Giving to someone to enable them to continue to be lazy, drug addicts etc isn't doing them or anyone else a 'good deed'.Much better to personally seek out someone that is deserving and give it to them directly or better make them earn it.I've offered countless supposedly 'hard up' people really great vegetables from my gardens all they have to do is pick them less than 5% have ever got off their rears and done it.Most of the poor ain't poor enough to do something for themselves and why should they? They can get a food card from the Gov't and eat better than I do see them all the time in the grocery store.

We had a program like that last year but I didn't hear about it this year. We did not have any extra tags this year as our deer population has declined a little, maybe due to the wolves, lots of wolf tracks big as my closed fist! I remember a couple of years ago they found lead particles in the hamburger, apparently the processor was not trimming off enough around the bullet hole. We have switched to lead-free ammo so that pretty much eliminated that problem.

Im not a hunter, but I think they have the same thing here in NY. Iv seen signs or read somewere about donating the meat. Now weather or not the people are lazy, or on the goverments payroll with handouts, ect, ect, and someone has extra meat to give away, in my opinion Id rather see the meat donated than wasted. j

They have been doing tht program here in IOWA but the animal lovers dont like it. Those people need a few deer to run into their cars then maybe they would shut up but we know that wont happen. Ia City has in the past paying pros to hunt in the city then the city gives the meat away after its been processed.

GeneMO has it right. Meat donated has to be processed by an approved slaughter house, according to what I read in the KC Star. This can cost a few bucks. In Johnson County, Kansas, it was reported that they had spent about $6000.00 on having the donated meat processed.
Still a great idea to help those who need meat.

Nancy---a very worthwhile program here in WI.

Since the deer donation program began in 2000, hunters have donated nearly 70,000 deer which were processed into over 3.1 million pounds of ground venison.

The DNR pays for the processing and accepts donations from participating hunters as well.

Many years ago they gave deer meat to what was known as "The County Farm" Where the elderly went to live, also called "The old folks Home" but someone didnt like the idea and they had to stop doing it, Wasnt inspected by the local government. I wish they would do it here again.

Why anyone would trust the goverment to oversee there food is beyond me. This goverment couldent run a cotton candy stand at a county fair.

Like another post said, Iowa has a program called HUSH... Help Us Stop Hunger. Hunters can take their field dressed deer to a participating locker and it is donated to the program. Locker processes it and the state gives it to those in need, also may be used to feed some of the inmates. I know some other states do this, not sure if Iowa does.

Nancy, it's a good program. Most homeless people have severe mental problems, there isnt many places they could work without some heavy duty counseling / medical help first. For those that are just lazy, what goes around comes around.

John

You may be overlooking reality my friend. Do you read the papers ? Listen to the news ? Millions unemployed and thousands losing their homes. Around the globe. One helluva sudden eruption of laziness and slothfulness you think ? I think not. For the most part anyway. Merry Christmas to you Ebeneezer!

The government wasn't watching the Iowa egg producer because W slacked of the inspections! 1900 people got salmonella, hope you were one of them!
