OT- GroundHog Smoke Bombs in Winter

I used a lot of groundhog smoke bombs this past summer and they worked well. I was thinking about doing some more this winter since I have the time, and the holes are easier to find in the pastures. I assume they will still work even though the groundhogs are hibernating. Are they harder to kill when they are hibernating?
 
I'd say that if you can smoke 'em out of their holes, bullets will be just as deadly in the winter as in the summer.

As usual, your mileage may vary.
 
Should work fine, I use em in the summer, saves a lot of time over waiting around for a shot. Not sure how you know the hole has a hog in it when they are sleeping but still fun lighting them off.
 
Anouther regional thing I guess. What is a groundhog smoke bomb and is this somehting you go into a store and buy or do you make it ?

Sounds Inhumane to me too. Suffication on smoke or any other killing agent isn't kind at all. Bullets are quicker if thats what people are after. JMHO. LOU
 
Doesnt sound all that inhumane to me.Smoke kills more people than fire.If sleepimg/hibernating the chucks probably wouldnt even wake up before they were overcome,Alot of fire victims never even make it out of their beds..Seems a lot less painful than a poorly placed shot. I agree with the other statement of how will you know which burrow is occupied? Jusy my opinion.Bill M.

p.s. I done them in with everything from smoke to gasoline to bullets,even a fencepost once,although my brother-inlaw has me beat,he uses bow and arrow.
 
Well considering the fact they are asleep ,and not awakened when the bomb goes off, now choking on smoke while trying to escape in a closed off tunnell doesnt conger up terror on the animals part, then I guess you could call suffication while trying to escape humane. So who knows if they are all asleep when the silent killer fumes flood the tunnell.Beating an animal to death with a fence post isn't something to be proud of either.Like I said , A well Placed bullet is much more humane then any lingering death,by bludgening or suffication. JMHO. LOU
 
Lots of other critters, rabbits especially, use woodchuck dens in the winter. You might want to run that buy your game and fish department.

I dont know the answer,but if you remember the posts of me fixing the foundation of the old shed where the ground hogs had dug under,I must do somthing to keep them from doing that again, Iwill keep a close eye on them this season ,smoke bomb or bullet, they are going to bite the dust if they come back!
 
Won't work in the winter. Groundhogs close the tunnel up behind them when they hibernate. I thought about doing that since it's much easier to find their holes in the fall/winter but the instrutions on the bombs say they close the tunnel--tried anyway and they are right.
So I close the holes up and mark em. In the spring the ones that get opened up get bombed--That works.
 
They don't suffocate. The bombs give off poisonous gas (sulfur dioxide)that kills them. It's like when you die in a house fire. the carbon monoxide kills you. You never wake up.
 
i had a seige of them and got a live trap and put lettuce and tomatoes in it and would catch them that nite most times putting just outside on their run. raise cain with buildings and cantolope
 
I got groundhogs every year invading my barn. Digging under the concrete and into the foundations.

I used a live trap and caught a big humongous mom and 3 of the kids in about a week last spring.

Now I think another one has moved in just before the cold weather started this fall.

Is there anyway to keep these varmints out of buildings, other than waiting to see the damage they cause before you know they're actually there?
