I headed out the door this morning shortly after 6:30 really not knowing what we were going to get into.

This is a picture of nick loading the vertical mixer while I am in the cattle shed. He's about a 150 feet from where I'm standing.

The Higgs farm where we winter the cows is three miles over and three miles back, getting there today was no small task. I did meet a car and a snow plow on the way over and I dont have a clue what ether one of them was doing.

This is our reason for being out in todays weather. The cows have to be fed. They can handle this weather just fine as long as they get fed. Quite a few of them were down in the draws in the field. Others were up in the sheds. I fed them up close to the buildings today.

The calves are here at home and they are normally feed in fenceline bunks but... the bunks are out on the north side of the lot and I sure wasnt going to make those poor guys stand out in this so we pulled right in the lot in front of the shed and fed them on the ground but at least a little out of the weather.

Wrigely sat in the tractor with me this morning and stared out at the crappy weather. He normally runs around the barn lot while we are here but today, he spent most of the time in the tractor. Currently he is curled up on a rug in the kitchen napping.
I dont know how much more snow we are supposed to get but it is still near zero visibilty outside and the snow is starting to pile up. Forecast for morning has the temps around 0F. I sure hope the wind lets up before morning!

You've nasty weather...cold in Kansas but very dry.

Wrigely is a cool dog..too bad he has the collar. I understand the law, seen a few farm dogs get caught up on a collar. Mine is blind so she can't wear one.

Thanks for the pics..

That's what we had in south central Minnesota yesterday. 20 inches of snow in the Mpls/St Paul area and along the I35 route south. I'm west of I35 about 15 miles and we got in the area of 6 to 8 inches. This morning many church services were cancelled as it is about -5 F and people haven't had time to "DIG OUT" yet. I don't farm but live in the country and need to blow my driveway later in the day. But the sun is shining brightly today and it's clear skies. So you can look forward to a bright sky probably tomorrow. Thanks for the photos. Looks like some mighty nice fat calves.

Pretty much the same up here in the Quad-cities Bill. My sis lives up NW of Dubuque and she had 6" of snow yesterday morn/afternoon with another 3" over night expected last night.

55joe55, Bill is from around Farmington, IL. Between Peoria and Galesburg.

yep same here it was blowing snow yesterday. we got around 18 inches total here in western wisconsin. made for a fun drive to work (5 miles one way) even in a 4X4. milkman got stuck early this morning due to severe drifting and ice underneath plus the county pulled all the plows off the roads at 10 yesterday morning cuz it was white out conditions and they didnt get back out until around 6 this morning.
hope you have a good day!

It's finally hitting here. I was expecting a mess when I got up this morning, but it was 34 and there wasn't more than 2 inches of heavy wet snow. Wind's picking up and temp's dropping like a rock for the last hour of so.

My 85 year old neighbor and I were discussing having livestock in this wretched weather. I had my fill when growing up on the home place. He sold his cows two years ago. He does miss them during the summer but is really glad they are gone in the winter. My "livestock" is self-sustaining", deer, squirrels, coyotes, a few mice and way too many racoons. On the other place beavers were as pesky as racoons but a neighboring trapper got six and a couple of coyotes which is seriously thinning them out.

You need two rows of eastern red cedars on the outside of thos trees. it's available cost share.

up here on il wis state line it was kinda rough today.
i had filled hay bunks up on friday as we heard it was to be bad yesterday and today both. we lucked out and didn"t get the snow weather guesser said we would. he said 6 to 12 inches i think was more like 2 to 3.
lots of churches cancelled some roads closed.
the east west road north of me was closed most of the day snow plow wrecker and several cars were stuck.
neighbor LeRoy has a newspaper motor route he didn"t get them delivered or home either. he is in monroe wi at sons girl friend with the son and grandson

US12 from Union, MI to I94 at Lake Michigan was like that a few times today, as was I94 to I80 most of the way around the bottom of the lake quite a few times. Roads in Michigan and Indiana were lousy. Illinois well salted and clean.

My sympathies are with you and the animals Bill. It makes it hard for a guy to get his blood flowing with the wind and white stuff blowing like that. Its been cold here, but awfully dry.

Looks like some really cold weather.

Sure hope all the livestock came up for feeding.

First time Wrigley isn't smiling; probably counting down to the nap on the kitchen rug.

Pat him on the head for me and tell him he's a good dog.

Enjoyed the photos; thanks for sharing them with us.
