JD Gator questions

I have a line on a couple of very used diesel JD Gator 6x4 for $1K each. They appeared very used (Cracked body parts, etc.). The owner says the clutch is gone on one and the belt is gone on the other, but both run.

Assuming a worse case scenario, replacing the engines or rebuilding fuel pumps, does anyone have a clue on the cost of this or where to find rebuilds?

What could be some other major expenses?

I do not mind having to work to fix these, but I certainly do not want to incur cost greater than a new one.

Any thoughts or help are appreciated.

You'd hafta go a LOOONG ways in repairs to equal the price of a new one. I think they're somewhere north of $12grand. Unless they are TOTAL junkers, at $1k each, I'd jump on em. I just watched a gas 6x4 that needed a new motor, and a few other things, sell for $2500 on ebay a couple weeks ago.

The 6x4 diesels used a Yanmar three cylinder diesel. You need to get those bought fast. The engines will last 3-4 thousand hours easy with little maintenance. As for the clutches and belts. They all can be repaired reasonably. The body parts like fenders and such are the same through the different models. So you can usually find used ones. New are not too high either.
I have a 6x4 diesel and I would never go back to the gas one. Much more torque and no idle problems in cold weather. I put more hours on it than any other thing I own.

We have 6 gators were I work. they are constantly in the shop. starters go every 2-3 years ($300ea) hoists had to be replaced ($700ea) transmission work, cheap steering linkages,clutches... the best parts about them are the non jd designed engines-haven't had that much trouble with them,(kohler and kawasaki) yanmar is a good engine too, when its not painted green ( then the price of the parts go way up)
As you can tell I will never personally own a gator.
Just my thoughts.

The 6x4 Gators are useless if you use them in tight places, snow or mud. They will not steer in wet conditions and very limited on getting around in tight areas. Out in the wide open they would be fine. There was a reason they quit making them. 4 whl drive became much more reliable.
