In 1874 testicular protection, i.e. "the cup" was introduced into hocky. In 1974, helmets became standard equipment. It only took 100 years for men to realize their brain was also important.

Ahh, but who was the last player not to wear a helmet after they became mandatory for new players, optional for veterans signing waivers? Happened until he retired from the Blues. I loved it.

Is only one sport in the whole wide world, cold steel on ice.

Craig MacTavis was the last player to not were a helmet, also took the last faceoff for the rangers in game 7 of the 1994 stanley cup finals

There were helmets way before 1974 but they didn't become standard equipment until well into the 80's. They were mandatory for new players coming into the league in 1979 but players already in the league could use the grandfather clause and not have to wear them. Paul Henderson was one of the most famous regarding a helmet in the 1972 summit series. His helmet probably saved his life when he went head first into the boards. Dave

Maybe the "cup" was protecting their brain also.Did hear onetime that both were sometimes found in the same place.

I took up hockey in middle age when I inherited my 12yr olds equipment when he out grew it. My wife's Lady League team was short players to pay for the ice time so husbands, boyfriends, wanna be's, has beens and cripples were invited to join.
After getting checked into the boards by a girl. I make certain wear every bit of protective equipment available.
I'll never forget laying on my back on the ice and seeing the girl taking my puck down the ice with a huge grin on her face.
