Many years ago there was a snowplow truck 2-3 tonner with a poor heater (probably a dodge) The mechanic took a heater core/fan from something and a bunch of hoses/tee's and put the core behind the seats and plumbed it up. You could wear a tee shirt in it and see where you were driving. Years later the same idea was used on school bus's and boats!!

I remember some of the old 50's Pontiac's had an under seat heater that allowed you to have better heat in back seat.

My Uncle had a pickup I believe he got some kind of conversion add on heater for the back (I believe he got it from JC Whitney) so Amish could be hauled to town under a cap.

My father bought me a1947 Ford Deluxe did not come with heater. Before winter had dealer to put gas heater in it,i have never seen or heard of another one with gas heater.

South Wind gas heaters were popular in the 40s and probably earlier, we installed them in Volkswagens into the 70s then they came out with a German equivalent. Nobody ever complained about the loss of gas mileage.

Dad bought a 1947 Plymouth new with the South Wind heater in it. You could almost see the gas guage move toward empty when you turned the heater on. But it worked good.

Folks had one in a 1936 Pontiac. Inside the car was warm before the engine was. Don't ever remember dad saying anything about how much gas it used.
