N-series issues

Gentlemen I wrote on the forum a few months back while I was in Afghanistan and am happy to report that all went well on our mission. Now to pick your brains. What might cause an N-series to just start sputtering, make blue smoke and die? The machine will just crank but not ever hit. Timing, resistor, coil? Thanks for any advise!

Pull off one of the plug wires and hold it about 1/4" away from the sparkplug while a helper makes an attempt to start the engine. If you have a weak yellow fire to your plug I would replace the condenser and clean the points. Then recheck your fire to your plugs. If it's still a weak yellow fire you probably need a new coil. PS: Take a look at the plug you removed to see if its wet. If it is you may be flooding the engine with gasoline.

My son is going on Vacation in Africa soon same sort of thing as you did all for uncle Sam.
Any how if your tractor sat all that time it probably has sticking rings and that would cause that problem easy. I would put about 1/2 cup of ATF in each cylinder and let it sit a few days. Be sure to put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc out. Then after a few days pull the plugs and spin it over to clear the ATF out of the cylinders. It will make a bit of a mess by the way. After doing that make sure you have a good spark (blue/white that will jump a 1/4 inch gap) and then try to start it
