I am a new tractor dealer and even though I would love to collect this piece, I must keep it moving, customer would like to trade-in a 40 crawler with JD factory blade, linkage inside of tracks, service history at local dealer, painted better quality than original, 700 hours total machine hours original, absolutely gorgeous, runs sweet, everything works well! Would like to sell him a new tractor badly but am unsure of myself on 40"s value, he wants $10,000.00, I don"t care if Idon"t make money on trade, but cannot lose any! What do you think????

Customers always want more than there stuff is worth, that's why dealers mark up prices. You would probably be safe at 1/2 that.

You're in business to make money. If you gave every customer what they wanted on trade and/or didn't charge enough for your products and services, you wouldn't be in business long. A 50+ year old crawler like that is more of a collector piece. I'd tell the owner you could give him a good deal on a new tractor but he'd be much better off selling the 40 on his own. He could put it on your lot and you could sell it on commission though. Then you're not on the hook if someone pays a lot for it and something goes wrong. Dave

Unless you live in a wealthy area, I really don't see how you can pay even $5000 and then resell it for more. I have had several of both the 40's and the 40c's and the best I ever got was $3500. Todays economy is terrible where I live.

10 Grand for a 40 ??? Not even a no brainer...Walk away from that machine..Let him sell it on Ebay then romance him to buy your brand of tractor..Don't even think someone else in the tractor business is gonna offer that much.. If they do, They're going to take it to the grave with them..You can't do even - even deals and stay liquid for long..You have to look at profit to pay your bills..Within reason....

I spent many hours replacing cracked final drive housings on the 40 crawler when I worked for a JD dealer.I would pass on that.Ive used a Case 310 crawler that was a better machine.
